Disney STRIKES BACK and says Florida is responsible for its $2B bond debt after Gov. DeSantis stripped it of 55-year-old special status

  • The district board met days after Gov. DeSantis ordered the district dissolved
  • But there was little talk of the issue save for a brief discussion on how it would affect a planned expansion of solar panels
  • The head of Reedy Creek's union says employees are in the dark about their jobs
  • By dissolving RCID, residents in Osceola and Orange counties would be liable for Disney's $2 billion bond debts
  • Tax collectors estimate the liability would raise resident taxes between $2,200 and $2,800 per family of four
  • Other legal experts allege a court may strike down DeSantis' ruling to dissolve RCID because of First Amendment violations
  • Many believe DeSantis removed Disney's special privilege status because the entertainment giant vocally opposed his so-called Don't Say Gay bill

DeSantis pulled a dumb.

Orange and Osceola county are worried that if this goes through, their on the line for a huge chunk of change, and it would force them to raise taxes and property taxes.

But stupid ****ers championed DeSantis and his dumb here because they are gleeful about the use of government force against free speech.

I wonder if this isn't a problem that can be solved by passing another law. Seems like a minor oversight to me.

The debt issue seems to be based on the assumption that those taxpayers would not be responsible for paying back the loans (bond debt) unless they were under a different government.

They could always just pass a tax for large corporations - say any employer in the county with over 70,000 employees.

Musk will not like...

Hahaha, yeah, that will fly.

Face it, DeSantis and his government force against free speech move ****ed up. FL either has to pay up, or let it go.

No, the government cannot retroactively make a private business financially responsible for something like this.

Weren't they responsible for it in the first place? What would be retroactive about it?

No, they can't. FL law is very specific on how taxes are applied. The county can't impose any taxes other than property tax and that must be consistent with all businesses. A tax cannot be imposed on a single company. Besides which the counties don't want to assume the responsibilities now covered by Disney. Maintenace, garbage collection, water, security roads, fire! it's huge! Interestingly the tax collector from Orange county was on TV saying this came right out of the blue and Orange was never consulted. You were right when you said
Trying to stiff the government never seems to end well.
DeSantis really blew this one stiffing Orange County and Osceola county and their taxpayers will not play well.

It is not a minor oversight at all! Forget the legal aspects. As I said Orange county was not even consulted about this. They want no part of taking over all the services Disney now provides for itself. It's a huge undertaking to assume responsibility for garbage, water, sewage, road maintenance, security, police, firefighters, transportation etc for a huge complex serving on average a 1/4 Million tourists daily......it would cause them to grow County staff exponentially....never mind the headaches.

I think what we will see is Orange and Oceola fighting this in court or in Tallahassee but they don't want it and they are furious!

Why would those counties have to take over services that Disney provides itself? If Disney was providing itself those services with its own facilities and employees before, can't they continue to do so?

Why do you just make stuff up? This isn't remotely true. Florida has a business tax. Counties have their own taxes.

Short version.......no.

The agreement that is currently in place is that Disney pays itself $105 Million a year in taxes and in return provides all its own services at no cost to the County. In addition, they pay the county all appropriate property and school taxes. If this goes through Disney will not pay for its own services and the County will have to assume them because Disney does pay, and will continue to pay, all appropriate property taxes which is normally how services are funded. The current agreement is a win-win for all. Disney doesn't have to get county permission to develop or maintainthe park lands as they see fit ( which is of a very high standard) and the County gets all the normal property tax revenues with none of the responsibility to deliver any services.

Maybe this will help

It was a short-sighted temper tantrum and utilized force of government against free speech. But we know the Trump-Right loved narcissistic temper tantrums and government force rebuttals.

Clearly, you don't know much about FL tax laws. The State is an anti-tax State and it is illegal to impose special taxes on any entity by all levels of government. The tax collector for Orange was on and he explained that raising any taxes on any business in FL is darn near impossible.....it's a feature of a GOP Government!!!!

ETA The important FACTO is that the County wants no part of taking responsibility for providing these services.....the cost is but one element.

Who will win this fight? My money is on Disney

Well we'll have to see if DeSantis is willing to pay up, and what his constituents would then do when their property taxes skyrocket.

You said "when THIS goes through." My point is that "this" can be changed with further legislation.

Suddenly every Disney worker will become an “independent contractor”.

That's hysterical coming from someone who just claimed that they can only impose a property tax.

Too bad for them. If this goes through, they can choose to take responsibility or be voted out.

I think you may think that the taxpayers are supportive of the dissolution...they are not. They are very angry at DeSantis....not at the County execs.
