Disney STRIKES BACK and says Florida is responsible for its $2B bond debt after Gov. DeSantis stripped it of 55-year-old special status

Disneys financial dealings sould not have allowed them to shape social poliicy or to have such control over their fiefdom. All they had to do was stick to their business of entertainment.

"All North Koreans have to do is keep their mouths shut."

I really hope they do because DeSantis deserves a very public spanking! However, will they or will they let the people of Oceola and Orange County rip him before the election? Dont know but I do know that this will be very public one way or another and DeSantis is going to look like the child he is!?
Yeah, Disney might be waiting to see if he's reelected?

Desantis just received a standing ovation for his position toward Disney. He isn't backing down and for all of you who thinks Florida is gonna pay Disney's bills, he says stay tuned, more legislation is coming. According to him they will be paying every bit of that bond.

Oops I forgot to mention he is doing a town hall tonight

I suppose Disney could just take Colorado up on their offer.

Tell us Canuck,
You got a dog in this fight? Did you grow up watching the "Mickey Mouse Show" and hate to see a strong Conservative U.S. governor have his way with the Magic Kingdom?
DeSantis is a politician with strong ambitions. He is flexing muscles trying to look good to the entire Right side of this country. Along with Independents who are looking for strong presidential leadership.

Why does that offend you? Are you so moralistic you can't appreciate nasty politics - regardless if everything is done legally?

If DeSantis is successful in forcing Disney to pay those two bonds....

You are saying that DeSantis and the Florida GOP have embraced socialism. True socialism is the economic theory where the government can tell citizens and corporations how to pay out and spend their profits. What DeSantis and the Florida GOP are proposing is literally a socialist program.

By allowing DeSantis and the Florida state government to renege on a debt and cast it back onto the corporation despite a prior public contract, you will see it applied to other businesses in other states. Without meaning to, DeSantis will have pushed actual socialism further along than anyone else has in the history of the US.

Congratulations, you've become socialists!!!!!

But that will be unlikely and stands a very good chance of being slapped down in court as the government is punishing a corporation for using its right to free speech. Which, in the Constitution, is a not a thing.

I was hoping that Disney had an iron clad deal and the Governor of Florida would not be able to strip Disney of its governing power.

The Sunshine State's laws stipulate that all residents must be taxed equally.

But winding down Reedy Creek Improvement District - the name of the private body that oversees Disney's Orlando resort - would leave the state liable for $2 billion in bond debts currently held by the entertainment giant.

Disney issued those bonds - seen as an extremely safe financial investment - to fund the expansion of Walt Disney World Resort.

But unwinding Reedy Creek means families from Orange and Osceola Counties would be on the hook for between $2,200 and $2,800 each, because the district would be absorbed into both areas.

On Wednesday, the Reedy Creek board of supervisors carried on with business as usual on Wednesday, barely mentioning the decision to dissolve the district.

Here it is! Finally! A thread about Disney! This is what you've been waiting for our entire Debate Politics Forum "career", @minnie616 :)

I'd love to know how much DeSantis has spent on lawyers trying to defend all his bullshit ideas.
You mean, "what DeSantis has made the people of Florida pay for his bullshit ideas"! He wouldn't spend a dime of his own money to damage Florida - he makes his constituents do it, like th good cynical, culture warring asshole he is.

Oh no, not socialism. Nobody told me DeSantis was one them.

Easier said than done......but they do need to give DeSantis a sharp stick in the eye.
An interesting tweet :

“If Reedy Creek goes away, the $105 million it collects to operate services goes away," as Scott Randolph, a Democrat who is the Orange County tax collector, said via Twitter.

A very interesting article from NPR

Been a Republican ever since I could vote. DeSantis and those who wrote the Bill to decertify Reedy Creek are abusing their political power.
Till this little tantrum I thought DeSantis may be a good choice to run for President. Not anymore.

I know quite a few others who don't agree with you. ps. They are also Republicans.

Wow! This is a huge deal! How many people were there?

He says a lot of things

Mike,
I guess that's why we have elections to determine who has the best message to deliver.
In 2016, Trump had the best message that resonated with most of the voters that counted.
DeSantis is very popular in his state. And he is testing the waters in other states.
2024 is so far away who knows what the voters will think of DeSantis by then.
I would like him to run against Hapless Harris. That would be fun listening to her word salad concoctions on campaign trails.

- what do you mean by "In 2016, Trump had the best message that resonated with most of the voters that counted."?

II agree DeSantis is testing the waters. He needs to clean up the "mickey mouse" mess he started. It is still an abuse of power by the Governor.

- I for one do not want Harris to run.

- what do you mean by "In 2016, Trump had the best message that resonated with most of the voters that counted."?

Probably a recognition that Trump lost the popular vote in 2016 and only made it to the White House because of 77,000 votes in three states giving him the Electoral College.

Let me parse it for you.
Trump kept haranguing Democrats on a number of issues, ( i.e. the wall, immigrants, the military, urban crime, lousy energy policy, lying Hillary, Democratic elite, etc.) that resonated with the voters who were fed up with D.C. politics. Do you remember that?
And people believed Hillary and her husband were corrupt.
Besides she was more unlikable than Trump if you can believe that.

That's why he won. He convinced those voters who counted he was right.

- I suspect some of his messages while in Office is the reason he lost reelection.
Thanks for clarifying.

Bottom line is too many people just ended up disliking him and his style.
Especially suburban women.
His constant grievance shtick and political retribution campaigns were just too much for the people to buy into again. Then he lost GA Senate races because he went down there and told the people the elections were rigged. Why would Republicans want to vote then if they believed what Trump said?

I have asked my Rep in Arizona pretty much the same type question regarding the mid terms. The AZ GOP keeps harping the election system if flawed and rigged.
- I have suggest to a few that they should resign. We have know way of knowing they were fairly elected do to a broken system.

Seems the system is only broken when they loose.

My worry is that the GOP teams in too many key states will be torn between supporting Trump's bullshit lies and those GOP members who want the Trumpists to wake up and look forward instead of backwards.
