If, in the Congress of a reunited United States, 151 years after everybody got together at Appomattox, ol' Jeff Davis can triumph over a genuine public health crisis, can we really determine who won that damn war, or whether or not what happened at Gettysburg was worth all the fuss?
You may have noticed that the Senate proved unable to pass a dog's breakfast of a funding bill to help fight the encroaching Zika virus. This is because the Democratic minority declined to vote for it. The reasons for this were simple: The bill had turned into a sop for the angry white Christianist bigot base vital to the re-election chances of Republican senators.

Back in May, the House passed a bill banning the display of the Confederate battle flag at VA cemeteries. This was the last big victory in the fight to eliminate the gonfalon of sedition from its entirely undeserved place of honor in our national life, one that began after the Mother Emanuel massacre in Charleston. Somehow, by a calculation so twisted it defies rational explanation, some Republicans in the House decided to sneak a provision into the Zika bill that would rescind this new rule.
The Democratic opposition to the bill in the Senate primarily dealt with the whack the bill took at Planned Parenthood, and the president was likely to veto this bill anyway, not least because it contains half of what he asked for to fight the disease, and because it does so by draining money from other urgent priorities. But, honestly now, babies are being born with severe birth defects, and this is seen as an opportunity to get back a fight you've already lost?

The answer to that question is yes, yes they did, and they also went after Planned Parenthood as well.

That's not too surprising considering that tea party republicans weren't elected to govern or make government better.....they were elected to destroy the government so they can claim that government doesn't work.

alternate headline for the Right Wing Noise Machine (as opposed to this piece from the Left Wing Noise Machine): "Democrats Are So PC They Will Kill Children Over It!!!"

Zika is a public health threat that has nothing to do with anything being PC or not. Yet, introducing an amendment like that to the bill is probably one of the best ways to set democrats against it and make sure the bill itself goes no where. It's playing politics and using a public health threat/crisis to make a point over a PC related issue. This is the party that supposedly cares about the unborn.

Neither party should do this - hang amendments on a bill that have nothing to do with the actual bill, but it happens all the time. I'd like to know exactly what the amendments say that caused the Democrats to vote against the bill?

By the way, the Confederate soldiers that are buried in National Cemeteries are considered Veterans of the Untied States by an act of Congress and signed by the President to make it the law. Putting a Confederate flag on their graves on certain holidays hurts no one, and is an attack on those men and their ancestors, like me. Take the flag down from state capitals - that makes sense, we're not in the Confederacy anymore. However, when those men died, they died under that flag, were laid to rest under that flag, and should be allowed to continue to lie in peace... under that flag. I didn't take that much of stand back when the flag came down from the SC capital, other than to say I supported it coming down, but, since then the left has gone absolutely bat-**** crazy over the flag and calling anyone that displays it an array of hateful names. Are there dangerous, hateful, racist people that use the flag? Sure there are. Are there dangerous, hateful, racist people that use the Koran as their banner of justification for their acts of violence? Of course there are - yet we haven't banned Islam, or the Koran, or references to Muhamad, or the crescent moon in National cemeteries.

As for the other amendments, like the Planned Parenthood amendment that the article refers to, I have no ides what it states, however, unless it's a repeating of the Hyde Amendment, it seems it would probably be superfluous and against Roe v Wade.

Yeah, the titles and tone of these articles are getting annoying as hell. I made a remark a few days ago about how it seems like some democrat or another is "Slamming" or "Eviscerating" Trump in some (relatively unremarkable) speech every other day. The level of outrage needed to compete in the media at the moment is producing these ridiculous sensationalist headlines, and its somewhat nauseating.

SHAGG TOTALLY DESTROYS THE MEDIA IN A SINGLE EPIC POST!!!

Yeah. The most annoying (deep down) part of it is, they wouldn't be doing that, if it wasn't what people wanted/responded to. :(

When someone burns the American flag, it's "just a piece of cloth", but when it's on a soldiers grave it's an issue greater than funding to fight Zika. In fact, it's the "do all, end all" of the outrage lobby! Puleeeeze!

They were Americans who fought and lost their war of succession, but they were Americans, none the less.
