Detained Canadian in China probed for harming national security

12/12/18
Chinese authorities are questioning former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig - detained days after the arrest in Canada of a Chinese businesswoman - on suspicion of engaging in activities that harmed China's national security. State-run Beijing News said on Wednesday that Kovrig, who works for the International Crisis Group (ICG), had become the subject of an investigation by the Beijing State Security Bureau. He was detained after police in Canada arrested the chief financial officer of China's Huawei Technologies on December 1 at the request of US authorities, infuriating Beijing.

William Nee, China researcher for Amnesty International's East Asia Regional Office in Hong Kong, said Kovrig's detention was alarming, especially as it appeared to be the first time the law has been used to detain a foreign NGO worker. Guy Saint-Jacques, Canada's former ambassador to China, was asked by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation on Tuesday whether the Kovrig detention was a coincidence after the arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou. "In China, there are no coincidences ... If they want to send you a message, they will send you a message," he said. A Western diplomat in China, who asked not to be identified, was even more blunt: "This is a political kidnapping."

This is what authoritarian regime's do ..... take hostages to protect their criminal national's abroad.

Pariah nations are simply going to have to be declared "no go" zones. If you travel there, expect no assistance to extract your stupid ass.

My issue is the arrest warrant was issued on 22 Aug this year. Was she in the States during that period, if so why was she not arrested. Then we have Trump playing his dumb ass games putting her in play for a trade deal.

This is what China does, we know this, we also know that they are not going to change because if they were going to change they would have done it a long time ago.

Using tanks to run over protesters was our clue.

The New Chinese Empire is no joke.

Meng was aware of the ongoing US investigation (and looming indictment) and had avoided the US since 2017 even though her teenage son goes to school in Boston.

With Trumps comments people wonder if this is politically driven. I do not, thing is other people will. Next case could be where a Judge in another country decides it is politically driven, extradition case turfed.

It also places other countries, with these idiotic comments in the cross hairs.

I have little idea of what is truly transpiring behind closed doors. Both Trump and Xi are untrustworthy.
