If Pete Buttigieg is allowed to say "America isn't ready for a socialist president" as an argument to why Bernie Sanders shouldn't be the nominee, then he can't complain when people say that America isn't ready for an openly gay president.

Buttigieg and other Dems aren't attacking Bernie's positions in this argument, they're saying "You're right, but shut up about it"

In other words, don't ask, don't tell.

Bernie didn't just choose to be a socialist, it's what he believes in and trying to silence him by claiming America isn't ready for him is letting Republicans have control over us. The whole point is that there needs to be a nominee who takes on Trump, not one who he's comfortable with.

I don't think Pete's sexuality is relevant to the debate at all.

My issue is with people who keep falling back on the same tired old argument that Democrats need to appeal to Never Trump Republicans in order to choose our party's nominee. That we need to be as lame, milquetoast, and uninspiring as possible.

They still think they can form some perfect candidate in a lab somewhere, focus test them to death, and still come off as authentic to voters. That is how we fool ourselves into people like a Clinton/Kaine or Kerry/Edwards ticket.

Democratic Socialist.

Actually I think Edwards might have been the best VP pick since at least Al Gore.

My problem with Bernie is he only changes his political party to Democratic during presidential elections and then goes back to Democratic Socialist when he loses. Don't get me wrong, if it winds up being Trump vs. Bernie I will vote Bernie hands down. There isn't a single Dem candidate right now that I wouldn't vote for over Trump.

No, because Pete being gay won't wreck the country, while Bernie's economic illiteracy certainly will.

You're trying to compare homosexuality to holding democratic socialist political beliefs? That is a thing that just happened?

:doh

I care less about party identity of the moment and more about what a candidate's record is and what they stand for.

Bernie calls himself a Democratic socialist. Many on the right call themselves Libertarians. Bernie votes Democratic the majority of the time and most Libtertarians lean Republican. In most nations with a more diverse lineup of viable political parties, individuals as far apart on the spectrum as Sanders and Bloomberg would never be competing for the same nomination. They have basically nothing in common other than a desire to defeat Donald Trump.

Bloomberg calls himself a Democrat. Do his values and history actually mesh with that? Is he more of a Democrat than a man who calls himself a Democratic Socialist? Not in my eyes....not even remotely.

So the problem Democrats have with Bernie is that he's an avowed Socialist? From what I'm seeing, so are all the other candidates. Is it just the label y'all don't like? I mean, if you're good with the ideas then why not adopt the label too? It's not like you're fooling anyone by claiming to be against Socialism.

That you for the reminder why Democrats should stop caring about being labeled by the right. You all have been calling literally every prominent Democratic politician a socialist for as long as I have been voting.

I’m comparing the argument of “America just isn’t ready for a democratic-socialist president” to the policy that told people in the LGBTQ+ community to keep quiet about who they are. In both instances, people are told to be silenced for no reason other than the “majority of people” don’t like part of their identity. Both are very similar and Buttigieg of all people should know better.

Right. And now every candidate on that stage, with the possible exception of Bloomberg, is a Socialist. The ONLY thing that sets Bernie apart is that he acknowledges the fact. Warren, based on what I saw in Vegas, may actually be left of Bernie! Biden and Klobuchar will gladly be whatever gets them an extra vote or two and Buttigieg is fine with Socialism but seems to have some idea that trying to pay for the plans might just put a voter or two off on the idea.

But god forbid anyone ever be a socialist. We wouldn't want to offend those Republicans, or else we won't win!

Republicans would block Obama if he tried to use the bathroom. They don't care about America. It's time for the candidates stop catering to them and start coming for them.
