Congressional Democrats are zeroing in on Secretary Steven Mnuchin following the Treasury Department’s controversial decision to ease sanctions on companies linked to a Russian oligarch with ties to the Kremlin, with some raising questions about his personal business dealings and potential for conflicts of interest.

Their focus: a decision the department announced Sunday easing sanctions against giant energy and aluminum companies tied to Oleg Deripaska, a sanctioned Russian oligarch. It's relief that Treasury officials first announced in December.

This guy Mnuchin is a crook. Lifting these sanctions after only 8 months because he put personal pressure on the Trump administration because of financial ties of Oleg Deripaska smacks of croneyism & worse. And don't for a moment believe that this was done without Trump's knowledge & approval. Mnuchin should be investigated by his own department (Treasury) before he is forced to resign.

It would be nice to get the full story for once!!

In its statement on Sunday, the US treasury said the three companies had reduced Deripaska’s direct and indirect shareholding stake and severed his control.

That action, it said, ensured that most directors on the En+ and Rusal boards would be independent directors, including Americans and Europeans, who had no business, professional or family ties to Deripaska or any other person designated for sanctions by the Treasury department.

“The companies have also agreed to unprecedented transparency for Treasury into their operations by undertaking extensive, ongoing auditing, certification, and reporting requirements,” the department’s statement said. Deripaska himself remained subject to US sanctions.

After the Treasury announcement, Rusal said Jean-Pierre Thomas had resigned as chairman and director of the company as part of the deal to lift the sanctions. Shares in Rusal jumped more than 5% in early trading in Hong Kong on Monday.

The Russian businessman Oleg Deripaska has agreed in principle to reduce his stake in Russia’s En+ Group, which manages his aluminium and hydropower assets, to less than 50%.

Both Deripaska and En+ were targeted by sweeping US sanctions on some of Russia’s biggest companies and businessmen on 6 April. The measures were aimed at allies of the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, to punish Moscow for its alleged meddling in the 2016 US presidential election and other so-called malign activities.

Deripaska has a 65% stake in the company and the aluminium giant Rusal, in which En+ owns a 48% stake, which were hit by the sanctions.

“Following a series of discussions with the company’s independent chairman, Lord Barker of Battle, Mr Oleg Deripaska has agreed in principle to the chairman’s request that Mr Deripaska reduce his shareholding in the company to below 50 percent,” En+ said in the statement.

Deripaska also agreed with the chairman’s proposal that he resign from the board and consent to the appointment of new directors to give the board an independent majority, it said.

Washington said earlier this week that it might remove Rusal from its sanctions list if Deripaska ceded control.
