Democrats shun idea of Pelosi floor fight in speaker’s race

Certainly not her alone but she is part of the problem. "Impeachment is off the table?"--Pelosi on GW Bush. What leader defangs her own party?!

Who puts the party through a process that has no chance of success? Have you noticed the count of Republicans in the Senate?

By the way, its more than a little telling that some Democrats don't like Pelosi, but can't even suggest an alternative.

It sure does look like she has the power to stay, nobody has the stones to ask for the job. My guess is the Pelosi has pulled a Clinton Corp, has promised to destroy anyone who steps up to take her on.

Compelling argument. Her job is to marshal votes and raise financing. When has she been bad at that?

The job of the Speaker is not to make money. You're making my argument.

The reason for the Democrats' loss was moving their centers of power from local communities to DC. I don't know whose decision that was.

I didn't pay attention to politics much in that period, what did she do?

Cardinal answered the question to some extent, I'm more angry at the fact she tried to claim she'd get most of her agenda passed in the first 100 hours, when we know her voting strategy has always been to vote first, and ask questions later. That did more damage to Democrats than anything Obama has ever said or done.

This is the angsty left at its worst. Showboating is not what matters. Getting policies passed that raise people’s wages, improve their access to health care, make education more accessible, etc are what matters. That’s what Pelosi does.

Because Pelosi has already stated she will attack anyone proposing a challenge.

Some--not all, but some--progressives are the Left's version of the Party Of No.

We differ.

The years 2006 to 2012. Her theatrics with Schumer allowed for Democrats to lose 60+ seats and guided us to the mess we have today. One where Democrats are trying to keep control of a single body of government just to have a chance in 2020.

That's BS. The loss was because of the now wildly popular AHC act and a black man in the Whitehouse.

I think dems are pretty unified in general. But comparing one dem to another, Bernie is more socialist then Pelosi, while Bernie is more about grass root campaign and lower income bracket building while Pelosi is more globalist and well entrenched in wall st and corporations.

That's true, what I'm looking for in a speaker is somebody who can bridge the corporatist and progressive wings of the party. I don't like the corporatism whatsoever but we have no choice right now and it's a first step to transitioning to something better. Pelosi does seem to be somewhat progressive so I like her in that respect.

uh huh angst

Except, puzzlingly, the “no” here is to advancing progressive policies.

It's the "we can run the race faster after shooting ourselves in the foot" tactic.

Was Obama in office in 2006?

Yeah the ramming through the ACA was really ugly and pissed off a ton of people.

Except she was so right about the AHC act. It DID need to get passed before people realized how much they would like it. That must really burn you up.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Call it the chaos theory for picking the next House speaker.

Those Democrats trying to stop California Rep. Nancy Pelosi from reclaiming the job say they don’t need a rival candidate just yet. Instead, they plan to show that Pelosi lacks the votes to win the race. And then, they say, new challengers will emerge.

Good. I can't stand Pelosi. She's a do nothing loser like Hillary Clinton. A conservative.

She holds her caucus together by meteing out punishments. Taking away perks like a parking place, staff, etc. maybe even moving your office after each vote she disapproves of.

Compared to Paul Ryan, Trump never had a chance. Its lucky he got what he did. My question is if she will put that 80 year old lunatic in charge of the finance committee.

Dhe has gotten away with so much theft and graft because she’s black and has an endorsement for pay system for California politicians. She does not even live in her district.

If she was white she’d be in the Greybar hotel.

So there is that.

If you look at the 2016 presidential primaries, Cruz and Trump were seen in republican voter circles as being less controlled by corporations, same is said for Bernie in the democrat voting circles. And due to the large percentage of independents out there, that's the group that has to be won over, your base votes for you anyways out of fear of the other party. Maybe dems have no choice now, as a Trump I have no say, but I think more and more people are rejecting corporate puppets. And Pelosi being that can hurt democrats popularity as being different and them painting republicans as corporatists.

Make money and marshall votes. Don't leave that second part out. The Speaker's role is also to successfully aim the agenda of the House's party members into one coherent direction. So again, when has she been bad at that?

Oh, give me a break. Anyone that terrified of her obviously has no business being Speaker.

Lmao - she voted for something she hadn't read, and you think this inspires confidence from people my age who want politicians that do more than vote for the same reason I am expected to do more than sign on a dotted line? Yeah, okay you've deluded yourself into believing I care that people didn't like the AHCA and then they did. My problem is that the Democrat leadership under Pelosi proved so inept that they proudly admitted to not reading what they voted for. That alone makes her unfit to lead Democrats. Time to move on, let someone who can spend time reading what they vote for take over.
