Democrats block slimmed-down GOP coronavirus relief bill as hopes fade for any more congressional support

9/10/20
The vote was 52-47, far short of the 60 votes that would have been needed for the measure to advance. Democrats were united in opposing the legislation; all Republicans voted in favor except Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.). Negotiations between congressional Democrats and administration officials have not restarted since collapsing in August. House Democrats in May passed a $3.4 trillion bill that would extend some of those measures and approve a number of other initiatives, such as nearly $1 trillion for cities and states, but Republicans and the White House rejected that plan. The White House didn’t begin negotiations with Democrats over what to do next until late July, and those talks faltered as both sides dug in. The failed GOP bill would have authorized new money for small businesses, coronavirus testing and schools, and $300 in enhanced weekly enhanced unemployment benefits. The measure included roughly $650 billion in total spending.

The measure did not include a second round of $1,200 stimulus checks for individual Americans, even though that’s something the White House supports. It also excluded any new money for cities and states, a top Democratic priority as municipal governments face the prospect of mass layoffs because of plunging tax revenue. And it contained some conservative priorities that Democrats dismissed as unacceptable “poison pills,” including liability protections for businesses and a tax credit aimed at helping students attend private schools.

The GOP bill also required that only schools that were 100% physically open could receive federal funding. Remote learning during a pandemic doesn't exist in the GOP mindset.

The GOP wanted to protect businesses from any COVID liability, and be as stingy ("the skinny bill") as possible with funding for Americans devastated by the COVID pandemic.

Republicans in the Senate have blocked the Democratic bill for the last four months.

Rethuglicans are desperate to prove how "pro-life" they aren't.

The liability protection thing is a huge issue. It basically allows businesses to put people in danger.

It's the same ugly thing they always do: play politics with something that people need, load up a bill titled to sound helpful but loaded with poison pills, then attack Democrats for saying "no...let's do this straight".

Yup. This thing isn't supposed to pass. But, their icing is that if the Dems are stupid enough to do it, they have a better chance of getting better economic numbers, cost in life ignored.

Blocking requires action. They simply ignored.

GOP isn’t interested in governing anymore. Just confirming judges to rule via bench what they can’t accomplish at the ballot box and stealing our money.

Just goes to show that neither Party in either chamber care as much about the American people as they do about their own agenda.

This is why Congress has a lower approval rating than Trump.

A stupid lie, of course. The Democrats passed a bill in May. If it's too costly for the GOP but the GOP agrees with helping, they would negotiate to meet in the middle. Instead, they load up a bill with GOP-policy only poison pills, slap a helpful-sounding title on it, say "our way or the highway", and then play politics when the junk bill inevitably goes nowhere.

Your description of the GOP bill applies equally to the Dem bill. They are both playing the same game.

That's why I say that neither Party in either chamber care as much about the American people as they do about their own agenda.

And while they are playing their games...the American people suffer.

Well if it comes to under-helping or over-helping the American people in the middle of a crippling pandemic with millions of unemployed,

I'll err on the side of over-helping (Democrats) the American people every time. The GOP/Trumpers will always elect to under-help the American people and over-help corporations

I guess the good news is they aren't very good at it.

Actually the House passed a bill 4 months ago so it is the Republican controlled Senate that only cares about Trump's agenda. That must change in November. Our lives depend on it.

Are you pretending not to know that the Senate GOP, the WH and the Dems engaged in negotiations until all the Congressmen went on vacation? Since then, the Dems have refused to resume negotiation.

But hey...blame the GOP, right? None of this is Nancy's fault.

Not me.

I'd rather help those who need it...not those who don't need it. For example, the cities who STILL haven't laid off any of their employees...even though they've demanded that businesses close down.

**** them...they don't deserve a bailout.

From what I hear, it mostly just shielded negligent businesses from COVID lawsuits. That's probably why Moscow McTurtle was pushing it.

They have refused to sign on to a "tiny" bill that mostly gives corporations immunity from bad behavior without addressing the real needs of the pandemic.

Did you actually read my post? I'm talking about negotiations...not political posturing.

Negotiation require 2 sides to participate. McConnell does not allow any negotiations. It his bill or the highway.

Yes. Two sides. And Nancy isn't interested.

As I keep saying...both Parties are playing games and the American people are suffering.

Democrats wont negotiate. Have you not been paying attention? The fact is, Senate dems blocked passage of a bill that would have helped Americans and you are ok with that. But ugly is the point with you guys isnt it.

ALL OF THIS is the fault of the party in control of the Senate and the White House with the chief spokesperson being Donald Trump. The GOP FAILED to restock the Emergency Preparedness Inventory thus COVID19 had time to permeate the USA = permeation has yet to halt. Trump had two reminders to do this in 2016 and 2017 by the military . Of course all were certain the government would answer the call as always. TRUMP FLIPPED THE NATION THE BIRD INSTEAD.

And all the republicans and some members of the democrats can think about is shelling out billions to the oil industry, and billions to the health insurance industry and billions upon billions upon billions more to other corporate tax dollar leeches who are so so wealthy they don't ned the money and WILL NOT put the money back into the economy. When it comes to big time reckless spending the fuc-king conservatives are in the spot light.

Tens of Millions have lost their jobs, 200,000 should not have died and thousands of small business employers are going out of business all due to the GOP negligence of the right wing radical anti american GOP. This is
more fu-king negligence beyond reality and reckless reckless reckless.

I say COVID 19 has been in America much longer than America was advised. Which brings forward the obvious question “ How long has COVID 19 been allowed penetrate the USA population?”

5,000 have died in China.

Trump said he lied -

Trump Admits He Lied About COVID-19 Threat In New Woodward Book | HuffPost

Trump Admits That He Lied About the Coronavirus – Mother Jones

Pay The Stimulus Money! IT'S PATRIOTIC!!!!

The employed did not ask the government to treat the coronavirus threat as if there was no reason for concern. As a result COVID 19 came upon us and is not going away. Meanwhile the GOP government is still advising no need to worry all will be swell. and Trump said all will be swell yet again no matter that 200,000 have died........thus far.

5,000 have died in China......... China has the largest population in the world. There is something wrong with this picture.

Why is Capitol Hill funneling billions upon billons of tax dollars from the COVID relief fund to the fossil fuel industry as we speak? This is reckless use of our tax dollars. Fossil fuel does NOT need bailed out.

The negligent GOP Elected officials pay themselves more than $3,370 per week ( $174,000-$194,000 annually) plus a variety of expense accounts = Over rated and over paid!

We taxpayers should receive stimulus money @ $ 2000 twice a month until further notice to keep the economy on task and keep small business employers open and issuing paychecks.

We taxpayers should receive stimulus money @ $ 2000 twice a month to spend in the economy which to keep enough economic growth on the table that generates tax dollar revenues. After all tax dollars do belong to the taxpayers.

Taxpayers are a credible investment for they will see that the tax dollars get back into the economy pronto which was noted the first time around thus WE KNOW it works.

Reckless decisions by the GOP government has put tens of millions out of work. Reagan/Bush, Bush/Quale, Bush/Cheney have all demonstrated such and NOW Trump is following suit.

The employed did not ask the government to treat the potential coronavirus threat as if there was no reason for concern. As a result COVID 19 came upon us and is not going away. Meanwhile the TRUMP government is still advising no need to worry all will be swell.

Unemployed workers should also receive $600 per week because they are seriously getting screwed...... perhaps until workers are called back to work or new employment is found that pays a part time living wage @ $33,000 annually or a full time living wage @ $64,500 annually.

No one knows when COVID 19 will go away obviously not anytime soon. Therefore government assistance should remain in place until further notice. Subjecting the nations once employed work force or for that matter any of us to congressional irresponsible behavior every few weeks is not acceptable.

Put the money in the hands of the taxpayers where it belongs to keep people on the job and economic growth on the table.

Nancy has no control over the Senate. McConnell does and he has no interest in anything but his own bill.

All of the above FYI .....
