it is true some Democrats did switch in the 70s and 80s to Republicans....but they were ALREADY all CONSERVATIVE Democrats...and they became Republican on a national level but, still remained Dems on the state and local level....and the key words are they were ALREADY CONSERVATIVE to begin with.....but, liberals still....when did ALL the Dems switch to Republicans..... answer THEY NEVER DID....what would have been a more intelligent answer from liberals would have been maybe The Civil Rights Act of 1964 which converted almost all of the Deep South to Republicans but, that would still be a argument in LIBERALS FAVOR....
I agree with this, as for Georgia anyway. Georgia remained a very Democratic State until 2002 when we elected our first Republican Governor ever along with our first ever Republican controlled state legislature. We now have two Republican senators but that didn't happen until 2002 when we elected Saxby Chambliss replacing Democrat Max Clelandl and in 2004 when we elected Johnny Isakson to replace Democrat Zell Miller who retired.
9 of 10 of Georgia's house of representatives member were Democrats through 1992. The 1992 election was when that begin to change. Today we have 8 Republicans, 5 Democrats. We went for Bill Clinton in 1992 and since have gone Republican in presidential elections.
So Georgia changed from Democratic to Republican in an 8 year period 1994-2002. That is long after the 1964 civil rights bill. I can't remember any elected Democrat switching parties. That not saying one or two did, I can't remember any. At least not any high profile elected leaders.
Now Georgia is slowly reverting back to being Democratic. Probably due to all those folks from the Northeast who moved down here. That in itself is kind of funny. They fled the Northeast to escape policies up there they brought about, now down here and are now instituting those same policies. Once they're successful, I wonder where they'll flee next.
