Democrat Senator Schumer objects to paying the Coast Guard

what bill has the senate passed?
none

you don't know what you are talking about. the senate has attempted to pass several bills and schumer has blocked them all.

https://www.cnn.com/2018/12/19/politics/government-shutdown-congress-trump-border-wall/index.html

The Senate passed a stop-gap spending bill on Wednesday night in an effort to keep the government funded and prevent a partial shutdown at the end of the week.

Please. Tell me more about what I don't know...

Very simple. Trump and Republicans are getting scared, and they realize that they're taking a ton of heat by letting a branch of the very military that's supposedly helping to protect them from immigrants suffer. They want to pay them and only them to appease their base so they will allow a continued shut down to hurt people they think their base is less concerned about. We see this every time there's a shutdown. After a short time, Republicans want to make sure the Military gets paid while continuing to screw over everybody else they don't care about.

Democrats know better. Either you open up the whole government or you open up none.

With functions like Coast Guard and DHS not being funded gives Trump the legal grounds for national emergency

So it's all or nothing for the Democrats. Dont complaian about getting nothing then. You made your choice, live with it.

It's interesting no one will answer the question. Why only the Coast Guard? Don't border control, TSA, Secret Service, FBI, DOJ and IRS and more also deserve a paycheck when they are being forced to WORK in jobs we've called "essential" to the country?

And the decision was Trump's to shut down DHS. If the optics of forcing the Coast Guard to work without pay are bad, it's politically damaging, simple solution - he can agree to a CR opening up the government and it will be on his desk by end of day.

Try reading post 14 or 48 that answers your question

Well to that, McConnell seems to be the Trump whisperer. He knows what the president wants so doesn't put anything before him even if congress passes it (HR 695 again). That's really not the way it's supposed to work, with senate majority leader playing ****-blocker for the president, but there you go.

I can't stand McConnell for lots of reasons, but I don't blame him much here. If Trump was an honest broker (spoiler - he's not), McConnell could pretty easily cobble together 60 votes and Pelosi would pass it, but Trump has a history of crapping on compromise bills and directly targeting those who made the tough choices necessary to get to passage. McConnell is up in 2020, and he's as popular as STDs, and the last thing he needs is Trump cutting his legs out from under him after doing the hard work of getting something through. And we know Trump would do it without a second thought if Trump believed it would help Trump.

So if Ann Coulter and Hannity didn't like the result and said mean things about it on the TV, Trump might veto it and a lot of Republicans have a bad vote on their record for NOTHING, or he signs a bill then blasts it for weeks on Twitter, including trashing McConnell. That's the LIKELY result, unless and until Trump publicly caves, and offers an outline he'll support and then McConnell pushes more or less exactly what Trump said through.

So the best analysis I've seen is McConnell is basically going to let Trump cave and then he'll step in, because it's not to his advantage or that of the GOP to get something Pelosi and Schumer would agree to (which won't be 100% of Trump's demand), then have Trump trash them non-stop for giving in to the liberals, etc. or however Trump would characterize it.

No, it doesn't. First of all, they are still working. Second of all, it is Trump and only Trump preventing them from being paid. You don't get to make the decision that causes a national emergency and then uses it as an excuse to declare a national emergency. A National Emergency caused by Trump's own actions would be a breach of his oath of office and grounds for impeachment.

Dems could pass a bill with wall funding and the gov would be reopened too. What's your point other than your feigned ignorance of what it will cost trump if the Republicans cave to the Democrats demands.

Go ahead and tell us with a straight face that if Trump did as you just suggested that the Democrats would come to the table and negotiate with him in good faith.

In the Senate a bill was put forth to pay the Coast Guard so they don't miss their paychecks, nothing in there was about a border wall, it was a clean bill to pay the coast guard, its could have been signed today by president Trump but Senator Chuck Schumer objected to the bill. So the democrats want to keep people from getting their paychecks now, what happened to wanting these people paid? Now watch all the leftys try and say its Trumps fault.

Wow, I have to give you some credit for inventiveness. Posting a tweet from that Texas asshole Cruz is really convincing - not. Everyone knew yesterday that two deeply flawed bills would be voted on today and everybody knew well in advance that neither bill had enough votes to pass. There were a number of Republicans that voted those bills down.

Remember something in the future before you try to post something that's inflammatory but isn't true - that we're all on top of this and every story and every tweet is investigated through different sources before we take it as a fact. And 'F-U' Ted Cruz, you lying piece of dog crap.

there is correct terms and not correct terms.

if there wasn't an actual veto then he didn't veto anything and even if he did the house and senate could have probably overcome a veto.
now that we have taken away your meme.

why are you not upset that schumer continues to filibuster bills that will get people paid?

He filibustered a bill that would get SOME people who are politically popular with the GOP paid, and would leave unpaid 100s of thousands of others deemed "essential" and working but not getting paid.

Then you start working on the others one by one. The ratcheted pressure on both sides means they will actually work on ending this.

Because they are a military branch and cannot just get a different job or apply for unemployment.

That's too bad, seriously. So the answer is simple - fund DHS and pay them, and pay the rest of the affected workers also deemed "essential" and forced to work with no paycheck. Because every one of those "essential" workers on the job with no pay is also disallowed by federal rules from getting unemployment benefits, because they are not unemployed.

Why just the coast guard? Fund the entire government Trump. Stop holding the country hostage for your stupid wall

You refused to answer the question because there is no good answer. That's very telling. You can't just admit reality. You need to try to twist it. It's desperation. Sad really.

It's all Trump supporters have. I don't know why any of us even bother, its like arguing to wall or a toddler. You are arguing the facts and reality, they are arguing their own made up version

That's not what I asked. Wow. Even more telling. When called out for being unable to answer you then pretend that I asked something completely different.

If you feel that you need to lie in order to win an argument you should step back and reevaluate. Seriously.

Of course, like I said above, they are arguing their own made up version. To me, they are doing it because they are either trolling, they have nothing, or they have mental illness that their brains take what they are reading and changes it to something not there

Why don’t you want to pay air traffic control?

Dems could pass a bill with wall funding and the gov would be reopened too. What's your point other than your feigned ignorance of what it will cost trump if the Republicans cave to the Democrats demands.

If it costs Trump politically, that's his own bed that he made.

And the reality here is we had an election, and the Democrats won the House. What that means is Trump cannot dictate to the House what he wants and expect House Democrats to say, "YES SIR!" and pass it. If he wants funding, he needs to go the normal route and make a deal. He didn't even give that a chance - he shut the government down before the new House was sworn in, and greeted Democrats with a hostage situation - give me what I demand or else! We have divided government for a reason, and it's not so that an autocrat can dictate his demands to the legislature and get a rubber stamp.

Go ahead and tell us with a straight face that if Trump did as you just suggested that the Democrats would come to the table and negotiate with him in good faith.

The Senate negotiated in good faith in January of last year, got 16 cosponsors (8 each Ds and Rs) and Trump cut the knees off those who came to an agreement.

https://www.wtsp.com/article/news/n...ts-daca-bill-25-billion-for-wall/67-519361171

The House tried to negotiate a bill this summer that could get to 218 and Trump cut the knees out from under that as well. Guess what - nothing passed the GOP House.

Then the Senate was given assurances by the WH that Trump would sign a CR keeping government open thru February, and so passed it by voice vote, and Trump screwed them again by threatening a veto if the House sent that along.

So it's not the Democrats who won't compromise here. Trump is demanding what he could NOT get the GOP House or Senate to pass for the past two years. And what's most damaging to the process is Trump cannot be trusted on this issue. He sends his minions to Capitol Hill and they give assurances about what Trump will support, they make a deal, and Trump screws them over by withdrawing support after the fact. So he can't be trusted even by the GOP to stand by his word.

Then you start working on the others one by one. The ratcheted pressure on both sides means they will actually work on ending this.

It's 180 degrees wrong IMO. The Coast Guard working without pay is a powerful pressure point because it's politically unpopular across the board. It's terrible optics because it's actually unfair, unethical, unsupportable by any principle of responsible government. How do you increase pressure to get to a deal by taking pressure points off the table?

And what's true of Coast Guard is just as true for every other affected employee, especially those deemed "essential" and commanded to work without pay.

It would be like dealing with a broader government shutdown by FIRST paying Congress and their staff, and WH staff. When do you think the GOP would get around to paying IRS employees? My guess is sometime in 2027 if they could get away with it....

Well said. And that may be just what's happened now that they've reached a 'deal'. Trump's people told him to back down. McConnell steps in and plays the 'dealmaker'.

Indeed that's just asking for it.

It was a stupid bill. You don't reopen the government one unit at a time tying up congress with a multitude of independent bills. I appreciate it when Senators refuse to indulge in the stupidity of their colleagues.

What the GOP conveniently neglected to tell anyone is that their Senate bill of yesterday gutted asylum.....

I can imagine Schumer holding out for all or nothing, which I honestly don't think he has to be so stubborn about. But was it a bill to pay the coast guard and only pay the coast guard or was there some rider attached he would disagree with? For example the GOP tends to introduce bills like, 'Let's pay the coast guard and ban transgender kids from public swimming pools' or some other pet project. This is often done to trap the other party into voting against it so they can then say, 'Look, he won't pay the coast guard!'

But really it all comes back to December when Trump promised to shut down the government if he didn't get what he wanted. They had a bill then, that's where it all starts. Anyone not getting paid is ultimately on him.

Bit of reflection there. It's Democrats that love the poison pill riders.
