Democracy in Hong Kong Slain

Those factories in China enabled the low-cost goods that supported a higher standard of living for many Americans.

A high standard of living by destroying its manufacturing industry and replacing it with a service economy? How long will such a house of cards last?

When Hong Kong was returned to China, nobody expected China to keep Hong Kong a democracy for the next 50 years. Protests in Hong Kong grew increasingly violent and President Xi is the worst dictator China had since Mao. He does not allow pro-democracy protesters to take over streets, staging violent protests. His predecessor was a decent individual who could be treated with respect by the West. But under President Xi, China is becoming Communist China again.

Note Hong Kong was never a democracy under the UK

Natural economic evolution.

You are right, for capitalism, the essence of which is to get the highest profit, it is natural to sell the rope on which it will hang.

"The New York Times" will move some of its employees from Hong Kong to Seoul. The newspaper's management explained that it is doing this because of the new Chinese law on national security.
Looks like it's a good law. These, who are the first to run from the ship - confirm it.

Having become the second in the world, China, which took this place previously belonged to the USSR, still did not become a superpower. The USSR did not depend on the West in any way, neither financially nor economically, and had the second army of the world.

"time to restore China to the place it occupied throughout most of world history: divided internally and worrying about invasions from the steppe."

Sometimes americans talking about their true goals. And this is not a desire for freedom, democracy and other prosperity for the whole world

Hong Kong really never had democracy... just saying.

Even someone as stupid as I knew that the Hong Kongers who were celebrating the return of Hong Kong to China in the 1990s would eventually be weeping and wishing that the Brits were still in charge.

The Chinese (so-called) Communists are tyrants.

It was only a matter of time that they showed their true colors.

I assume that Taiwan knows better than to ever trust the dictators in Peiping (the name before the Reds took over).

RIP Democracy in Hong Kong 1997-2020, though Hong Kong really never got a taste of real democracy, since unelected leaders always trumped their elected ones, and their election system was basically designed to favor pro- establishment candidates. Still it was expected that PRC thought even that was "too much" and would reign it in, especially now that Xi Jinping is in charge who has increased authoritarianism in China.
