Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) on Sunday demanded that William Barr, President Trump's nominee for attorney general, give "ironclad assurances" during his confirmation hearings this week that he will not impede special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation.

Durbin said during an interview on ABC's "This Week" that he's "worried" about whether Barr can properly oversee Mueller's probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible obstruction of justice on the part of Trump.

Sen. Dick Durbin says he's "worried" over whether President Trump's nominee for attorney general can oversee the Mueller investigation in a fair way.

Durbin says Bill Barr "had better give us" some "ironclad assurances" about his independence.

There are no such assurances when it comes to today's Republicans sadly, as we've repeatedly seen; there is no trust to be had or merited.

My obvious concern is that Trump wants Barr as a political hack simply to do his bidding in all DOJ matters, including Mueller. Comrade Trump sees Mueller as a real threat.

Durbin should talk to Graham. Wouldn't be hard to do...after all, they both work in the same building.

i wouldn't believe a promise from a Trumpist.

He is indeed making such assurances today.

But I wonder...what if this is really a set-up? What if Barr sent that information to the DOJ because he knew it would make him look like the man for the job. Perhaps he wants to the job specifically so he can assure that the special counsel continues unabated?

Trump is that easy to manipulate.

(But that it is just a "what-if")

A few years later and the citizens of Trump Fan Nation still tinkle in their panties wondering what Loretta Lynch and Bill Clinton discussed on the tarmac, so I'm sure they all fully understand Durbin's concerns about fairness. Right?

It's hard to tell at this point.
