Daunte Wright shooting bodycam - police breakdown - NSFW

The Brooklyn Center, Minnesota police department consumes 40% of the city budget. It has faced numerous misconduct charges, six shooting deaths since 2012, and has paid out hefty settlements. Not even one of the 47 Brooklyn Center police officers lives in the town they patrol. Most officers are white, while most residents are people of color. Nearly all officers are male, while the city is mostly female. The department was investigated at least 88 times for alleged officer misconduct and department policy violations from 2016 through 2020.

Kimberly Potter, the officer who shot Daunte Wright is a mother to two adults sons, and joined the police force in Minnesota in 1995 at the age of 22, and had 26 years in policing. Most of her police service records provided to journalists were heavily redacted. Service weapons are typically metal and metallic in color. Tasers are plastic and are usually neon yellow. Tasers are usually worn on the opposite side (the weak side) of the service weapon. Officers are usually trained to draw the taser with their weak hand. All of these training requirements and working procedures are designed so that it is almost impossible to mistake a service weapon for a taser or vice-versa. Training should also be continuous throughout the year. Something is terribly amiss here. Either recruitment, or training (or both, are fundamentally flawed).
