TEMECULA, Calif. -- An angry father is accused of using a stun gun on a 23 year old man who sent his 17 year old daughter an explicit cell phone picture.

William Atwood Sr., 45, was charged Wednesday with multiple felonies in connection with the case.

Authorities say Atwood lured Justin Moore to his home, ordered him to strip down to his boxer shorts, and tied him up and tased him with a stun gun before turning him over to a sheriff's deputy.

You wouldn't want me on that jury if you are the prosecution. I'd let him go free and clear. (the father)

Sick bastard. And what is a 23 year old doing with an underage 17 year old?

Are we as a society going to crack down on "sexting" with our children or not?

My favorite part:

Atwood told Moore he had connections with the Pechanga tribe and was going to have him buried on the reservation, court records say.

Prosecutors declined to charge Moore in connection with the photo for lack of evidence, said district attorney's spokesman John Hall.

What kind of crap is that? The phone company will have the evidence even if the phones are wiped.

All the father needed to do was turn the guy over to authorities. Since his daughter is a minor, I believe that there would have been multiple violations. I understand his anger at the guy, but what he did was against the law, and he should be changed and sentenced in accordance with that. Sorry, he has no right to violate another's rights because he's mad.

How, exactly, is a man sexually interested in a 17 year old a "sick bastard"?

Interesting also is that the age of consent is 18 in California, one of the highest in the nation.

I was wondering the same thing. I find it odd that it is socially acceptable for guys in their 20s to be sexually attracted to 18 year olds, but if she's 17 then he's a sick bastard who deserves to be tased.

Agree, two wrongs don't make a right.

I think the most relevant question to ask is why on earth did he have him strip down to his boxers???

Damn right.

Humiliation? I don't know, it's hard to try and rationalize irrational behavior.

There seems to be a trend of kids sending naked pictures of themselves and getting arrested. Just because he's a couple years older doesn't make him more "sick" than others. "Sexting" Leads to Child Porn Charges for Teens - CBS Evening News - CBS News

Were she 14, I'd feel your rage a little bit more. Since she's mere months from being legal in Cali and would be legal in many states, I'm not that concerned about it.

I assume you were outraged at Bob Dole doing the Pepsi commercial with Britney Spears then?

While I sympathize with the father a bit, he overreacted badly.

She's 17. If she was 14 or even 15 I'd be more understanding.

I am REALLY surprised that Cali has 18 as age-of-consent. Must not be enforced much.

I totally get where the father is coming from, but he really went too far. He had perfectly solid grounds to turn the guy into the police.

I doubt if he improved his relationship with his daughter much by his actions.

BTW, there's nothing sick about a 24 yr old having the hots for a 17 yr old. His methods of courtship, however, are idiotic.

For all we know, she instigated it by texting him similar pictures of herself.
Some couples do this sort of thing regularly.
Just because dad only saw the one text doesn't mean that's all there ever was, or that it was unsolicited.

If she did, then SHE could be arrested for child pornography.

I'm sure she was a willing participant. These kids...

What 17 year olds actually do, and what the law says they should do, are two different things.
When I was 17, I was a married mother of two.
In my state, you see, the minimum age of marriage is 14, with parental consent.
Or it was at the time, anyway. Maybe it's changed.

Obviously the father had a macho Dad moment, most likely alcohol induced. :2razz: In his own, old-fashioned way he was trying to protect her honor.

Teen 'sexting' craze leading to child porn arrests in US - Times Online

I forgot to post the link to the story where kids are getting arrested for sending photos of themselves. My mom graduated when she was seven months pregnant with my sister and married so things were what they were and are what they are now.

So, today, they're not getting married. They're just sending nude photos of themselves.

Are we as a society going to crack down on "sexting" with our children or not?

Um, why exactly? Who is being harmed by the practice? And how is it worse than just appearing naked in person, or using actual photos, both of which people of that age have been doing for quite a while?

Are we as a society going to stop creating moral panics where none exist or not?

Sure. We're going to "crack down" on it just as effectively as we cracked down on mooning and streaking in the 50s, and skinny-dipping in the 60s.

Teenagers who want to will find a way to show off their naked bodies.
Sexting seems more innocuous than some previous ways, in that they're not even doing it in person, but sitting at home alone in the privacy of their own bathrooms/ bedrooms.

Which is actually why I posted that "sexting" story. Good (albeit stupid) kids are doing this. Do parents really want their children to have to register as a sex offender for the rest of their lives because they sent their boyfriend a picture of their boobs?

If we continue this "crack down"; we're going to be criminalizing a LOT of young people.

Agreed. it's a preposterous overreaction.
As usual.
