I live in northern Delaware, on the border of zones 6b and 7a on most agricultural zone maps. I cut this dahlia flower about a week ago, and it was the first to open. It's an 8" diameter flower from a dahlia cultivar called "A.C. Ben", which is capable of producing basketball size flowers of 12-14" in diameter and depth!
I typically plant the tubers between late May to mid June, weather permitting. It takes approx 70-90 days for the tubers to grow and produce their first flowers, at which point the plants should be about 3 to 5 feet tall. Most of my varieties will flower continuously from mid-late August, to early November. The dahlia plants will finish the season between 5-7 feet tall!
Here are photos of some of my other dahlia varieties from later in a previous season. The plant you see there was taken on November 2nd, 2017.
