Cuban Dissidents Arrested On Way to Apostolic Nunciature in Havana

The Education in Cuba is under the absolute control of the Communist party, and will begin in elementary school with the so-called "Cumulative School File." It measures "revolutionary integration," not only of the student but also of his family. This file documents whether or not the child and family participate in mass demonstrations, or whether they belong to a church or religious group. His university options will depend on what that file says. If he does not conform to the regime indoctrination, he will be denied many career possibilities.

Cubans Pull Off Evangelism Campaign--Despite Government Restrictions

Churches in Havana, Cuba have scored a spiritual victory--running a historic evangelism campaign--despite government restrictions and questioning.

In Cuba, Christians have no access to billboards, radio or television. Nevertheless, churches in the capital of Havana wanted to organize a multi-media evangelism campaign that would reach Havana's two million residents.

With funding from Great Commission Media Ministries, over 300 churches from 40 denominations created a book of testimonies. Each testimony tells the story of a Cuban who came to faith in Christ.

The "Power to Transform" campaign created an unexpected result: unprecedented unity among believers in Havana as they collaborated on the outreach. It also succeeded in spite of pressure from the government. Some leaders in the campaign were called in for repeated questioning.
Despite this, they were able to import thousands of campaign brochures and books into the country.

Kudos to Christians for their "Power to Transform" campaign. Many Cubans have experimented a religious revival. They succeeded against all odds.

Christian volunteers’ scarified a lot and risked retaliation from the regime, but they manage to carry out the campaign. Believers have been imprisoned and tortured for preaching the gospel. They laid the foundation for the present revival.

Kurt Urbanek, father to Mercy’s very own Scott Urbanek, wrote a book a few years back called Cuba’s Great Awakening. Kurt has been a missionary to Cuba for over 20 years now and in his book he chronicled the movement of God that has flourished for the past 25+ years unbeknownst to most of the evangelical world. In this time frame, Cuba has grown from 0.5% to 10% evangelical. That is almost 1 million people who’ve become followers of Christ in the past 25 years. There is perhaps no richer soil on the planet to plant the gospel right now than the island of Cuba.

Despite the lack of freedom, religious persecution and severe economic hardship, religious movements have grown in Cuba. Christians were excluded from university education and promotions at work. But when in 1991 the subsidies from the Soviet Union were ended, the Christians provided essential supplies that the Castroit regime could not provide. Today Christianity in Cuba is thriving and Castroism is withering.

"Today, Christmas and Good Friday are national holidays once more. Churchgoers no longer face official discrimination. For the first time in five decades, the government has given the church permission to build a cathedral. And Catholic authorities face increasing competition from fast-growing evangelical denominations, many with close ties to US churches. “There is freedom of worship now, yes,” said the Rev Roberto Betancourt, the priest at Our Lady of Regla, one of Cuba’s landmark churches. “But that’s not the same as freedom of religion.”

Indeed, no other country in the Americas is so restrictive. The Cuban government doesn’t allow the church to run its own schools, or broadcast on television or the radio. Public acts of worship or proselytising are proscribed"

Great idea, keeping religion in its place.

Cuba Bars Pastor From Church Leadership as Punishment Amid House Arrest for Homeschooling Children
Cuba Bars Pastor From Church Leadership as Punishment Amid House Arrest for Homeschooling Children

The Cuban government has told Pastor Ramón Rigal, who is being punished for homeschooling his two children, that he is no longer allowed to work as a church leader. The pastor has instead been assigned a new job, checking if the water supply of local houses has any mosquitoes.

Officials in Guantanamo Province have told Pastor Rigal, of the Church of God in Cuba, that he is no longer permitted to work as a church leader, and that his new job is to check for mosquitoes in the water supply of local houses, according to the U.K.-based Christian Solidarity Worldwide.

In April, a Cuban court sentenced Pastor Rigal to a year in prison, and his wife, Adya, to spend a year under house arrest.

Rigal said at the time that Cuban authorities used the three-hour trial more as a platform for denouncing alternatives to state education than as a venue for delivering justice.

Religious freedom violations are carried out by the Castroit regime security forces under the umbrella of the Office of Religious Affairs throughout the island. The regime repression against religion groups has increased. Church leaders have come under increased pressure over the last seven month period of this year.
