Cuba once more seeks U.N. condemnation of U.S. embargo

For the 22nd consecutive year, Cuba will ask the United Nations to condemn the United States economic embargo against the island, a top Cuban official announced on Monday, accusing Washington of tightening sanctions in place for more than half a century.
U.S. President Barack Obama, who stated before taking office that he wanted to recast long-hostile U.S.-Cuba relations, has been a disappointment to the Cuban government, which expected him to do more to dismantle the embargo.
The embargo, fully in place since 1962, has done "astronomical" economic harm, Deputy Foreign Minister Abelardo Moreno said during a news conference to present Cuba's annual report on the damage wrought on the Communist-run Caribbean island by U.S. sanctions.
Last year the vote at the U.N. General Assembly was overwhelming, with 188 nations - including most of Washington's closest allies - condemning the embargo. Only the United States, Israel and the tiny Pacific state of Palau supported it.
This year the debate and vote is scheduled for October 29.

And here it comes again. The vast majority of the world votes against this pointless aspect, and yet it remains in place. It serves no point. This needs to change.

Living in Florida I have lots of Cuban friends. To a person, none want normalized relations with Cuba while Castro lives. I have to respect that however personally, the embargo and restrictions on travel don't make any sense to me. I'd love to visit the island although once there, the government puts restrictions on travel for foreigners within the country.

It obvious hasn't worked. I understood it during the cold war, but that's been over for quite a spell now. It is pointless.

Ive actually heard otherwise about resitrctions on foreigners visiting the country. One member here from the UK i believe it was traveled to Cuba and he said there were virtually no restrictions. He even said he hitched rides with everyday Cubans and talked to them about issues and what not.

Upside more openess always leads to some sorts of changes in a country, more trading possible between US and Cuba, and with Cuba opening up more foreign investment there is always a upside there.

That doesn't work with a small-time dictator. They take all the money and do bad things. I know, that's difficult to believe but it happens every time.

Interesting. The people i have talked to after visiting Cuba told me different expierences.

No, it's because America doesn't want to let go of a good pout. Trade with feudal despots but shudder at the thought of trading with Cuba because they confiscated a few hundred acres of oranges.
