Viktor Lukyan, sentenced to six years for murder, had little chance of a fair trial under a system that presumes defendants are guilty.

Russian crime investigators are under pressure. Not to discover the truth, but to close cases quickly so their supervisor looks good to his supervisor and on down the line.

They will torture suspects, or plant evidence etc. Whatever is required to make the 'facts' support their narrative. The ends - convictions - justify the means.
