Creators of carbon credit scheme cashing in on it
By Judi McLeod
Tuesday, March 13, 2007
There's an elephant in global warming's living room that few in the mainstream media want to talk about: the creators of the carbon credit scheme are the ones cashing in on it.
The two cherub like choirboys singing loudest in the Holier Than Thou Global Warming Cathedral are Maurice Strong and Al Gore.
This duo has done more than anyone else to advance the alarmism of man-made global warming.
With little media monitoring, both Strong and Gore are cashing in on the lucrative cottage industry known as man-made global warming.
Strong is on the board of directors of the Chicago Climate Exchange, Wikipedia-described as "the world's first and North America's only legally binding greenhouse gas emission registry reduction system for emission sources and offset projects in North America and Brazil."
Gore buys his carbon off-sets from himself--the Generation Investment Management LLP, "an independent, private, owner-managed partnership established in 2004 with offices in London and Washington, D.C." of which he is both chairman and founding partner.
Wow wow wow, why isn't this on the front page of every newspaper in the U.S.???
How exactly is Al Gore "cashing in" from his non-profit organization?
Established in April 2004; Independent, private, owner-managed partnership; Offices in London, and Washington, D.C.; Plans for Melbourne in 2008
Comprised of a global, integrated team of 23 people, including 12 investment professionals
Dedicated to thought leadership on sustainability and capital markets ~5% of our profitability is allocated to the Generation Foundation
Generation's Advisory Board consists of global thinkers who help us anticipate the changing context for business
Generation > About Us
And this Chicago Climate Exchange thing appears to be just that: an exchange.
WTF are you talking about Generation Investment Management is a for profit bussiness which sells carbon credits:
Trajan Octavian Titus said:Again wtf are you talking about it's a carbon offset company, what the hell do you think it does?
Maybe I'm missing something here, but this company's website talks about buying and investing...I don't see any mention of selling carbon credits. Is that the primary purpose of this company? Is that part of the company for-profit too?
The Profit of Doom
As the controversy over global warming doomsayer Al Gore's voracious energy-eater mansion rolls on, there's an angle I think merits deeper investigation than it is currently getting. While much of the focus has been on whether or not Gore is an environmental hypocrite, the story has raised the profile of the role of "carbon offsets" in achieving a "greener," more environmentally friendly world.
In its original story, The Tennessean reported that Gore buys "carbon offsets" to compensate for his home's use of energy from carbon-based fuels. As Wikipedia explains, a carbon offset "is a service that tries to reduce the net carbon emissions of individuals or organizations indirectly, through proxies who reduce their emissions and/or increase their absorption of greenhouse gases."
Wikipedia goes on to explain that "a wide variety of offset actions are available; tree planting is the most common. Renewable energy and energy conservation offsets are also popular, including emissions trading credits."
So far, so good. But how Gore buys his "carbon offsets," as revealed by The Tennessean raises serious questions. According to the newspaper's report, Gore's spokesperson said Gore buys his carbon offsets through Generation Investment Management:Gore helped found Generation Investment Management, through which he and others pay for offsets. The firm invests the money in solar, wind and other projects that reduce energy consumption around the globe, she said...Gore is chairman of the firm and, presumably, draws an income or will make money as its investments prosper. In other words, he "buys" his "carbon offsets" from himself, through a transaction designed to boost his own investments and return a profit to himself. To be blunt, Gore doesn't buy "carbon offsets" through Generation Investment Management - he buys stocks.

From the (brief) Wikipedia article, Chicago Climate Exchange appears to just buy/sell the carbon offsets that the government or companies create, the way that any other stock exchange operates. If that's wrong, provide a link instead of being a dick.
He's buying carbon credits from himself:
Trajan Octavian Titus said:Ya umm and that's not profiting from carbon offsets how exactly?
That does not answer my question.

They aren't the ones offsetting the carbon, they're just providing a medium of exchange. What's wrong with that? Come to think of it, what's wrong with people profiting from it in the first place?
Read the article:
Trajan Octavian Titus said:You don't see anything wrong with the inventors of the global warming myth profiting from their fear tactics?
I did. I'm still waiting for an answer.
No moreso than the parachute manufacturers who invented the gravity myth profit from their fear tactics.
