COVID-19 vaccine latest flashpoint in White House campaign

WASHINGTON (AP) — The prospect of a vaccine to shield Americans from coronavirus infection emerged as a point of contention in the White House race as President Donald Trump accused Democrats of “disparaging” for political gain a vaccine he repeatedly has said could be available before the election.

“It’s so dangerous for our country, what they say, but the vaccine will be very safe and very effective,” the president pledged Monday at a White House news conference.

Trump leveled the accusation a day after Sen. Kamala Harris, the Democrats’ vice presidential candidate, said she “would not trust his word” on getting the vaccine. “I would trust the word of public health experts and scientists, but not Donald Trump,” Harris said.

Vaccines, if at all possible to develop, take a minimum of several years to develop, test & subject to reliable clinical trials. Trump is politicizing this in the hope of winning votes in Nov.

Eight to 9 months to develop & test a new vaccine is unlikely. No vaccine has ever been developed for a coronavirus. Scientific projections call for another 6 to 12 months being needed at a minimum.

A recent poll said that only 20% of the population would opt for taking the new vaccine & that 50% would take a wait & see approach to see how it works out. Twenty per cent would have nothing to do with it.

As a footnote, Trump is not educated in the sciences & plays politics with those who are, like Drs. Fauci & Brix.

Meanwhile, South Dakota is the new hot spot for COVID. Huh? How is that possible? There were 300 to 450 thousand bikers there just a few weeks ago. Does anyone think that there may be a connection? Well, Fauci does. But Trump and Pence and COVID Czar Jared don't see any connection. That of course means that Trumpublicans, QAnon cultists, and a dwindling number of bikers and their families don't either.

Who is going to rush to become vaccinated if/when one is developed? Not me. I'll wait.

As Trump has proven that he CANNOT be trusted it's doubtful that Democrats, Never Trumps, and Independents are planning to jump right in and get vaccinated.

Some Trumpublicans and QAnon cultists might be first in line for a vaccination. I doubt many will as so many of them are anti-mask, anti-social distance, and were probably anti-vaxers from even before COVID.
