MEXICO CITY, Sept. 5 -- Felipe Calderón, a former energy minister and onetime long-shot candidate, was unanimously declared president-elect of Mexico on Tuesday in a court decision that capped a two-month legal battle but did not end the nation's political crisis.
Calderón's opponent, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, refused to recognize the decision. During a fiery address before thousands of supporters in Mexico City's downtown square, the Zocalo, he mocked Calderón as an "illegitimate president" and pledged to create an "alternate government" to "refound the Republic and reestablish constitutional order" before the Dec. 1 presidential inauguration.

Obrador was ready to recognize the court's decision, until the ruled against him. I've listened to left wing rhetoric by my local liberal talkshowhost(Bernie Ward), and he champions the protestors in Mexico not recognizing this election and taking it to the streets. There was a piece in the Economist on this.

On August 28th it was revealed the result of the recount. More than 220,000 votes were annulled but Mr Calderon's lead shrank by just 4,813 -- not nearly enough to change the outcomes even if projected across 100% of the ballots.

Obrador is undermining a fledgling democracy.. sad to see Mexico possibly spin into chaos like this.

The tribunal ruled unanimously in favor of Calderon btw.

He's trying making a state within a state, to establish a rebel gov't...

He's already lost a 1/6 of his voters due to his actions since July 2.

Now that the final decision is out he's bound to lose far more supporters..

With Mexicos history of not being a democracy and run by right wing nationalists.. oddly the same crowd that yet again won an election under suspicious circumanstances again... do you blame them for asking the hard questions?

If Mexico had a history of free and fair elections then I would say he was a bad loser, however Mexico does not have a history of free and fair elections.. in fact its quite the opposite.

The ruling party has basicly been in power for decades on decades, via manipulation and election fraud and now we have to believe that just because the reformed the "system" that its free and fair and the same people who have all thier lives fixed elections in favor of the right wing nationalist party, all of sudden stop and become fair? Are we to believe that a people can change so drastically in under 1 generation basicly?

Saddly I see the situation going from bad to worse and in the end the right wingers imposing a dictatorship once again under the excuse of a left wing insurgance... not exactly the first time someone in South and Central America does this.

International organization after international organization has declared this election free and fair. The fact that it has not been historically is moot. Obrador is a sore loser, and a dangerous one at that.

Try left wing nationalists buddy. The institutional revolutionary party (PRI) that had been in control of Mexico for over 70 years is a member of the socialist international buddy. They are squarely on the left.

Really Kelzie? Well that's funny considering how many votes were annulled and irregularities found after only a 9% recount. Obrador is not a sore loser but a champion of democracy and all the "liberal media" has spouted is that he is a sore loser. They pay no attention to how ****ing corrupt Mexico and it's elections are.

Really Trajan? Let's see some facts to back up the PRI being part of the 'Socialist International' (Doesn't exsist. Trust me I know). I know Mexico very well and the PRI is not leftist. They are at best centerist. They made a alliance with Calderon's right-wing fraudulant party PAN (National Action Party) in the Chiapas gubernoral election.

Trust you? You know? Apparently what you don't know would fill a Mack-Truck:

SI member parties - Latin America and the Caribbean

Full member parties:

Mexico - Institutional Revolutionary Party, PRI

http://www.socialistinternational.org/maps/english/southa.htm

So like I said the PRI is squarely on the left as has been the majority of authoritarian regimes for the last century.

Umm The Socialist International is a group for social democratic parties. which are like democrats. The most socialist thing they have in their principles is 'be nice to the working class'. In what way was Mexico an authoritan regime?

So are you saying that because they are not full fledged Communists then they are not socialists? Furthermore; Obrador's party is also a member of the Socialist International.

Which are like democrats

Ya maybe modern Democrats.

The most socialist thing they have in their principles is 'be nice to the working class'.

lmfao ok sure thing.:

Democratic socialism is a broad political movement propagating the ideals of socialism within the context of a democratic system.

In many cases, its adherents promote the ideal of socialism as an evolutionary process resulting from legislation enacted by a constitutional democracy. Other democratic socialists favor a revolutionary approach that would establish socialism by creating a non-parliamentary direct democracy, usually based at the local and national levels — including broadbased popular associations such as worker councils, consumer councils and community groups.

Writers and activists such as Robert Owen, Karl Marx, Eduard Bernstein, George Orwell, Bertrand Russell, Sidney Webb and Beatrice Webb have contributed to democratic socialist philosophy. Popular movements such as trade unionism, the Chartists and the British Labour Party are also notable.

Democratic socialists are still socialists they just believe that socialism can be achieved through the Democratic process rather than through revolution.
In what way was Mexico an authoritan regime?

Hmm one party in control of Mexico for over 70 years for starters.

How is it that you people can claim that Mexico has been dominated by a right wing nationalist authoritarian regime and then when it's brought to your attention that the PRI is a leftist party and a member of the socialist international you suddenly change your stories.

Is it still your contention that the PRI is a right-wing party?

220,000 votes from the most controversial polling units were annulled, and even if you project that irregularity through 100% of the votes, Calderon would still win.

The ruling was unanimous, internationally certified, Obrador is denying the results and calls for the undermining of Democracy, simply refusing to accept the results and do everything to interfere the legitimate gov't.

We could do a full recount, or simply hold the elections again. This time Obrador won't have a chance, he's lost marginal support due to his uncalled bellicosity.

Yes, really LeftyHenry. Prove that the election was so hopelessly corrupt that the results are void. Cause I've got multiple international organization who's job it is to moniter elections for fraud that say you're wrong.

For those on the left, having lost is sufficient evidence of a fraudlent vote. For those in other countries who are on the left, that's enough evidence for them to agree. Obrador lost? Must be fraud. I would not call PAN a right-wing party. They are to the right of the PRI and PRD but that's not saying much.
