Any war is costly to wage and especially to the attacking nation. It is said (see below) that this war is costing Russia $20 billion per day. Of course, that figure is not all the costs of the war but it includes what is being lost due to the sanctions imposed and the economic impact of the war itself:
I did find one article from March 3rd (18 days ago) that stated that in the first 4 days of the invasion, it cost Russia $7 billion in the losses from the military costs alone. Imagine how much more has been lost since the war is now in the 27th day.
With all the missiles and bombs being dropped and the continuing loss of tanks, aircraft, and troops as well as the costs of supporting the war (food, supplies, equipment, etc.), the costs are exorbitant. In fact, the cost of each missile is approximately $8.4 million, and so far Russia is launching an average of 100 missiles per day and last Sunday they launched 320, which means that just on missiles "alone", over $24 billion has been spent.
It was said before the invasion began that Russia had about $640 billion in bank reserves but because of the sanction involved, that only about half of that remains.
Putin cannot afford (literally) continuing this war and that does mean that something quite dramatic could happen soon as Putin will not allow himself to be humiliated by losing the war. Don't be surprised if he starts to use the weapons that will get him in even more trouble with the rest of the world.
Daily cost of Ukraine war likely to exceed $20B for Russia: Study
Beyond military costs, there is fiscal pressure on Russian economy due to sanctions

The direct losses from the war alone – including liquidated military equipment and casualties among personnel – have in the first 5 days cost Russia about $7 billion. Of this, the loss of human lives alone is forecast to account for $2.7 billion in lost GDP over the coming years.
