Coronavirus: Northern Italy quarantines 16 million people

Italy now has more than 6,000 cases, slightly behind South Korea's 8,000. Italy is Europe's worst-hit country because millions of Chinese tourists have visited Milan and Venice, where the word quarantine was invented, leaving the coronavirus behind. Trump is considering a travel ban on countries like Italy and South Korea, where two of the world's major coronavirus outbreaks are taking place. The coronavirus may infect people around a patient by wafting through the air and breathing the same air with a patient in a confined space may be deadly.

It is fitting that the word quarantine should have originated in northern Italy during the medieval plague.

Looking more and more likely that quarantining huge zones just as China did with some of its mega-cities will be the way to beat the virus. Death rate is still pretty low though.

Death rate is low, but the real big worry is mutation. The more that catch it, the higher chance of mutation and the higher chance of mutation into something with a much higher mortality rate.

Milan is the banking center of Italy, which now is sliding ever faster in recession, and Europe can only follow.
 
Italy's European neighbours have pledged to keep borders open despite the new coronavirus spreading down the country. When several European countries have announced their first coronavirus cases, all apparently linked to the growing outbreak in Italy. There are now hundreds of cases reported in Germany, France and Britain. To contain the coronavirus' further spread in Europe, the EU should quarantine Italy by restricting movements of people across Italian borders. It should have been done much earlier, following the Chinese example. China is quarantining people who enter Beijing from other cities and they have to spend two weeks in isolation.

Our situation will be as bad as Italy's in about a month.
