For over 9 months, to varying degrees, we have been dealing with nothing but shit over the coronavirus. An ever rising death toll. Having to wear a mask anyplace you go into. Various offices closing. Banks only letting you into their lobby by appointment. Businesses not running. Busses not running. Businesses closing or not letting customers inside. A constant economic toll being taken on this country and all sorts of other crap. OVER 9 MONTHS OF THIS!!! And more to come if something isn't done. Why not take three short weeks to be done with all this once and for all. To do this, all we need is some preparedness. And look at Ireland. They just had another lock down slammed down on them. No preparation. And the best it will get them is a short reprieve.

As everybody knows, people needing things means people needing to go out. This is what I propose. To make it work well, we will need other countries to be on board. Give people at least 6 weeks to buy everything they might need to last for 3 weeks. Also, in the U.S. we should have another stimulus package where everybody gets $1200. (Though after so many months it would be more helpful if it was $5000) This would give everybody plenty of money to buy the things they would need to last them for 3 weeks. And with 6 weeks to do it in, there should be no shortages. If you can't find what you need this week, you should be able to next week, etc.

Then when the time comes, shut just about everything down. Things like hospitals, electric and water plants would have to remain open. But extra precautions could be taken for workers at such places. Some stores would also have to remain open. For people to buy things that weren't planned for. Also, for this shutdown time, suspend any rents, mortgages, electric, water and even cable payments.

For 3 weeks, this would indeed suck. But nothing even close to what over 9 months of this already has! And will otherwise continue to do. Then after 3 short weeks, just think of it. No more coronavirus. No more deaths or lasting illness from it. Being able to go anywhere without having to even look at a mask again. Teachers and children could safely go back to school. No continuing unemployment could be blamed on the coronavirus. Any need for a coronavirus vaccine would disappear. Any need for a flu vaccine would disappear. In just three little weeks. All of this seems to be worth the effort to me. What do you think.

I've thought about the same thing, but China had to lock down for more than 2 months to accomplish what you're talking about, and they have the legal means to actually enforce it. It wouldn't work in the US. People simply would not comply. And there are probably a lot more functions than you think that we can't just shut down for 3 weeks. Keep in mind that many European countries had pretty strict lockdowns in place for a lot longer than 3 weeks, and their case numbers went very low, But now that they're reopening and hitting Fall, their case numbers are skyrocketing again.

This is dishonest. Europe is just now reopening??? Europe shut down early and fast and as such had a much shorter shutdown than the US did. People in Europe have been back to semi-normal lives for nearly 6 months now while the US has struggled. In Germany we were partially shut down for 2-3 weeks and the rest of the 9 months we've been working normally and have had far less deaths and far less infections per capita.

We just need to tighten things up. Crack down hard on any big gathering. We are seeing rallies, big church services, home parties etc. Mandate country wide mask wearing. Hold businesses more accountable for keeping up safety protocols.

We need a leader to get the country on board. Tell the country to suck it up for a couple of months. We could do all this without major shutdowns.

If that's what Germany actually did, then what is it that Trump supposedly did wrong?

Yes. If folks want the economy back they need to do just that. If folks could contain themselves for about 8 weeks, this could be over.

This option was available early in the pandemic but we screwed that up. Sadly, I think we are stuck waiting for wide distribution of a vaccine.

Trump spent MONTHS telling people not to wear masks, that anyone who did disapproved of him. He had no national strategy of any kind and pushed responsibility to the states who then fought each other for resources.

He then fought any attempt to socially distance or actually shut down, it wouldn't have taken a long shutdown to be effective. He repeatedly lied about the seriousness of the virus and was a horrible role model for Americans, refusing to wear a mask, even when he was infectious.

This was horribly mismanaged and there was a lot that could've been done had he taken responsibility and acted. Germany did a partial shutdown for 3 weeks and the rest of the time has been back to work because people wear masks and socially distance.

Insisting on reopening too soon and easing restrictions prematurely; and all for self-serving political reasons-his re-election prospects. That's the sole reason your cases are off the charts. You think Trump gives a shit about you or your fellow Americans, or anything but getting his grotesque ego massaged? You aren't even close to "rounding the corner", Covid isn't "going away" any time soon, and the worst is yet to come. Good luck.

I don't recall Angela Merkel continually telling her supporters that masks and other preventative measures were signs of disapproval of her, or that the virus wasn't a big deal. I suppose that's a notable difference. What will be the case for Europe now is how to manage indoor activities in a way that won't cause the kind of spikes we're seeing. It's a bigger issue for some European countries because of the multigenerational homes.

Yes, especially so in Northern England where certain cities have very large Asian populations where, traditionally, everyone from grandparents down lives in the same home.

Yep. I also think of countries like Spain and Italy where multigenerational homes are part of cultural tradition. When I was in Spain, there weren't many homes I visited where I didn't see grandparents living there.

California had lockdowns for months, and mask mandates, and as soon now they started opening, case numbers went through the roof. They didn't open up because Trump said so.

The same is happening in Europe, but the poster to whom I responded claimed that Germany opened up in just a few weeks.

Do you think CA started reopening in May because Trump said so? Does CA do anything because Trump said so?

Pretty much every European country had a terrible time in the spring, had strict lockdowns and got their numbers down over the summer, and now that they're opening up, their numbers are once again through the roof. One might reasonably conclude that all the lockdowns were pretty much for nothing in the long run, unless the plan is to stay locked down forever.

We are still on the first big wave. They are starting the second wave. In between, they had a life. Same with most Asian countries, and Nordic countries besides Sweden.
America, Brazil, still on the first wave. The vaccine is only 50% effective at best, and half the country won't get it. Just how long should we be infected?

Germany has been up for 6 months and had a shorter shutdown than most of the US. Trump and large swathes of our country didn't take the virus seriously and now we're paying for it. I'm glad you guys at least stopped claiming it's no worse than the flu. That's progress.

Right. Germany had a shorter shutdown but far better results than CA, NY, France, Belgium, Spain and Italy. What's your point, exactly?

I already explained my point in detail and you refused to address any of it. First it was to call out your lie that Europe is just now opening up, and second it was to list some of the numerous things Trump did to make our situation worse. Let's start small and pick one thing.

Trump spent months telling people not to wear masks and stating covid is no worse than the flu. Do you think if Trump had done the exact opposite of that, like every other leader on earth, it could've saved some American lives?

Like others have said, Merkel did not lead an anti mask movement when her states were trying to get people to wear masks like Trump did. Merkel is not running around the country holding super spreader events and telling people to ignore COVID-19 and that it’s going away. She wasn’t yelling LIBERATE, LIBERATE when her states were following guidelines necessary to reopen safely.

Also, I didn’t see mentioned that Germany has one of the best testing, contact tracing and quarantine programs of any country. Something that Trump has tried to keep from happening here because he thinks too much testing is bad because it uncovers too many cases which doesn’t fit the narrative he wants to spin. Unfortunately for us Trump is too stupid to realize that more testing along with contact tracing and quarantine leads to far fewer cases and deaths, not more.

Fortunately, Biden wants to increase testing by a factor of 7 and employ an army of contact tracers. Too bad Trump didn’t do the same months ago. We could easily done what Germany did and had about 1/6 the number of deaths if Trump had worked to control the virus like Merkel did instead of making things worse. Thanks to Trump we are the 208th worst country out of 217 as measured by deaths per million population.

I think Covid-1984 will never gone because all Corona liars must take responsibility for numerous crimes against humanity

The Devil, as they say, is in the details. Another applicable aphorism is "There's a solution For every problem which is quick, simple and wrong."

Many households, perhaps as high in the US as 40% or so, live from paycheck to paycheck. They do not have the necessary funds to stock up for the required time. There are also the homeless. And don't forget housing facilities such as nursing homes and senior living communities. Someone would have to pony up there also. Our present conservative-ridden government cannot even cough up the necessary funds for more pressing needs as it is.

Regards, stay safe 'n well. Remember the Big 3: masks, hand washing and physical distancing.
