One problem with this type of analysis is that it assumes hackers can brute force trials consecutively without delay. Most real world applications requiring a password will lock you out for a fairly long period of time after a few attempts. That adds to the time factor, immensely. And they would likely be permanently locked out long before their set of possible combinations was exhausted. That being said, if someone insists on using very common passwords like 'password', hackers do not even need to try combinations, they just pool from a set of common and obvious words -- minimizing trial attempts and lockouts.
