CLEVELAND, Ohio — The paperwork said the mailed package contained $40 worth of women's camisoles. Someone in China sent it to a Toledo address.

Inside, there were no camisoles -- just low-quality, fake NFL jerseys with misspellings of players' names and poor quality stitching, records show. Federal agents had tracked the package and others like it to Richard Schmidt, a Toledo man who ran a sports memorabilia shop in Bowling Green.

But what began with investigators chasing box loads of counterfeit jerseys and baseball caps ended in one of the most perplexing seizures of weapons in Ohio: Authorities in December nabbed 18 guns that included assault rifles, more than 40,000 rounds of ammunition and body armor from Schmidt, a felon who killed a man and wounded two other people in 1989.

Investigators also found possible links to white supremacist groups. He had a VHS tape of a national meeting of the National Socialist Movement and stickers from the National Alliance, according to an inventory of seized items filed in U.S. District Court in Toledo. Agents also obtained notes with the names of Jewish and NAACP leaders in Detroit.

My question about this story is how could a guy who has a murder conviction on his record was able to acquire 18 weapons and a good supply of ammo without being detected?

Probably knew a guy. That's the thing, people on the "no buy" list who want weapons will get them no matter how many safeguards exist, this guy wasn't afraid of breaking the law on counterfeiting licensed merchandise or murder so what's a weapons charge going to mean to him.

Easy. He either had someone do the NIC background check and paperwork for him, bought them from private owners, or both. Bans and prohibitions are incredibly easy to circumvent, because the law is a rigid structure that uses standardized methods and systems. All you have to do is understand how the system works, and have the right connections to the right people in order to beat it. I could throw down some money and get an unregistered pistol with no serials right now with a simple phone call, and there's not a damn thing Johnny Law can do about it. No laws enacted and enforced can ever stop the black market, or the naivety of the people who allow themselves to be used by the criminal element.

actually its against the law for someone with a felony to even touch a weapon, let alone buy one. Your complaint is about the mechanism to enforce that law which like the war on drugs won't work when you have illegal sellers and buyers agreeing to violate yet another law.

It is not illegal to sell a weapon to a felon. It is illegal to sell heroin to a felon

It is not illegal to sell a weapon to a felon. It is illegal to sell heroin to a felon

actually that is not correct. The issue you have is that if you do not know or have reason to know that the buyer is a felon you don't break the law by selling to him. The buyer is in violation of the law though.
