The House passed H.R. 4844, amended, to amend the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 to require any individual who desires to register or re-register to vote in an election for Federal office to provide the appropriate State election official with proof that the individual is a citizen of the United States to prevent fraud in Federal elections, by a yea-and-nay vote of 228 yeas to 196 nays, Roll No. 459.

Hopefully this can be a deterrent to voters fraud.

I watched much of the debate on CSPAN and the majority of the opposition was in fact on the Dem side... concerns for poor old black and poor young black people... The arguments were laughable... some repubs did chime in about Quakers that refuse pictures required for photo ID and American Indians that have issues with ID records period.

I thought the most profound statement was one about a Dem district where 112% voted of the registered voters for the district.

Coming from overseas after retiring from the Army I registered in my home state and they sent me a change of party form... Indicating I was voting in the other party... guess what I had not voted there before.

Sure there are some issues that need to be ironed out in the bill. The Democrats do have a point to an extent. Poor people do tend to move more often than those of more fortune. I know of a friend who does work for a living but is actually barely above the poverty level and moves at least once a year. I do think that photo ID's are a good idea to root out fraud the details just need ironing out to fit a greater picture.

not everyone in Dem dominated district is a Democrat. I owuld like to actually see the breakdown of the voting in this "dem District" if you have a reference source for me to look at.

I thought we already had a law like that to keep people from voting twice. I have always been asked my ID when I vote. It should have been in place all along and there is no good reason against it.

where I live alienken, all you need to do is sign your name next to your address. No ID, No Proof of Citizenship, no nothing. Some illegal alien or someone who has already voted can be like "ey, I'm NguyenRhymesWithWin" and then vote on my behalf if I haven't already voted.

I have always had to show my ID here where I vote. It's a splendid idea.

Not in Washington State.....In The last governors election in heavily democratic and liberal King County there were thousands of votes more then actual people registered..........

You mean the Republican Congress actually had a good idea?

Wow! I did not know that. No wonder there is so much voter fraud. The local Gov. controls the voting process and if they are not doing their job, the feds. need to crack down on them. It's hard to believe that their is no legal structure around something as important as voting.

I think the dems got their head up their butt for not getting behind this 100%. But what else is new?

Did I hear that the Georgia law requiring voter ID's just got shot down?

You gotta have an ID to drive. You gotta have an ID to buy beer. What's the most important? Buying beer or voting?

It ain't a dem/rep thing. It's a common sense thing. I'm all about common sense. I'll leave the partisan hackery to those more qualified...hrumphh..

I agree that this is probably a good idea. However, I think that the reason why a lot of Republicans are for it and some Democrats are against it, is that it will likely have the effect of keeping the more poor people from voting and those people tend to vote Democrat.
The reality is, Republican voters tend to be the more affluent, who are more likely to own cars and have Driver Licenses. Now, obviously this is a generality...but a generality that I believe is supported by statistics.
If you don't own a car or drive, you are less likely to get a license or even an ID for that matter. There are a lot of poor individuals who simply don't believe that having a DL or ID is a priority for them.
So....while I do agree that we probably need this law....I can understand the argument against it.

I believe that we should make the voting process as accessible to people as we possibly can. Which is why I believe voter registration with ID/DL application was a good idea (which incidentally many Republicans were against).

Don't they have to have a state ID to qualify for their food stamps?

if you want my honest opinion State ID's should be freely given to all of the people who claim citizenship within the state they reside thus eliminating the cost for the poorer families. the probability of that happening in a GOP controlled state is non existant.

Yeah that is all we need is another giveaway program that will cost millions.....

better that than the cost of voter suppression by the GOP. Besides, how High is President Bush's deficit again?
