Congress is moving closer to imposing economic penalties against Venezuela's government.

State Department officials will brief a Senate committee Thursday on violent street protests that have rocked the country for weeks, and a House panel will finalize its version of a sanctions bill Friday.

The legislation in both chambers is relatively modest. It centers on $15 million in new funds to promote democracy and rule of law in the South American country. It bans visas for Venezuelan officials who crushed anti-government protests by students, opposition leaders and others and freezes their assets.....snip~

We should have put sanctions on them decades ago.

Heya Beaudreax :2wave: .....I think it does. Also did you hear about those Embassy workers that got shot at some Strip Club there? Remember when BO had the incidents with Secret Service? Well here it was States turn.

U.S. Embassy workers hurt in Venezuela strip club shooting.....

Two U.S. Embassy employees in Venezuela were injured on Tuesday in a shooting at a well-known Caracas strip club, police said.

Officers heard shots around 4:25 a.m. at the Antonella 2012 club, better known as "Angelus" in the upscale Chacao district, a police source told Reuters.

One of the embassy employees, military attaché Roberto Ezequiel Rosas, was shot in the leg after a fight between club patrons, according to a police report seen by Reuters and the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The second embassy official was shot in the stomach but did not notice the injury until arriving home, the source said.

In a terse statement, the embassy confirmed an "incident," but gave few details.

"We can confirm that two members of the U.S. Embassy in Caracas were injured during an incident early this morning. Medical staff informs us that their injuries do not appear to be life-threatening," the statement said.....snip~

Here it only showed one person's name. Says he was shot in the stomach, of the other. But it wasn't life threatening?

Why should we get involved in Venezuela? Its a Venezuelan issue, let them handle it. The opposition and the government have been meeting and trying to hammer something out. Its not right to get involved in Venezuela.
Last time we got involved in Venezuela we tried to overthrow a democratic government. Not a good idea to introduce sanctions.

Well for one they are in our backyard so to speak.....plus didn't they kick our people out of there? Either way we will go with the sanctions which will target their leaders.

Maybe even Citgo.

So what? That means we have to intervene?

Yes. For supposedly aiding the unrest.

Either way we will go with the sanctions which will target their leaders.

Maybe even Citgo.
If you target Citgo the doesnt just affect the leaders of the country it will affect the people of the whoel.

Well....not by my choice. But then that isn't stopping Congress from moving forward with them.

I think they have to go thru the Stages before they can get to Citgo.....but I am not sure on that.

Fair enough you are not the Congress. But just raising the point.

They can go directly at oil revenues. I dont see why they could not be able to.

Same reason we couldn't with Russia.....start out targeting Leaders and then Owners. Hit Round 2.....after that they can go for their economy, I thought.

Btw did ya see I hit up your Boko Haram thread too.

I mean thats what we did in UN. But i dont think there is any protocol of what we can and cannot sanction.

I have not. Ill have to check it out.

How is issuing sanctions comparable to orchestrating a coup attempt? On one side we are saying we don't approve the actions of a government and therefore, starting with their leaders, say they can't have access to our market or financial sector. On the other, we actively aided in the attempted removal of a democratically elected government by a coup.

It seems a but incongruous to compare the two. It's not like denying the right to sell to Americans is a human rights violation, though it can be a pretty effective tool.

Just bringing up the point of what happened last time we got involved in Venezuelan domestic politics....
