Condoleezza Rice urged the Southern Baptist Convention to show respect in the wake of the gay marriage debate's recent revival as a political maneuver on the part of George Bush and his neocon supporters. She is quoted as saying:
Hoping to deflect attention away from his foreign policy travesty in Iraq, Bush attempted to rally his ultra conservative base by championing the sanctity of marriage, supporting a constitutional amendment that would sharply and narrowly define marriage once and for all. The amendment was subsequently rejected by a large majority of the house...a republican controlled house, mind you.
Condoleezza's speech following the SBC address says two things to me. First is that this administration is not totally putrid. Condi, for example, has shown remarkable insight and sensitivity on all fronts while being saddled with the burden of supporting a labotomized president. Her comments today show that there is a moderate face to the Republican Party and that the whole party should not be held at fault for the sins of what has turned out to just plain be a bad president.
The second thing it tells me is that Bush is that the Bush mentality of invincibility and self righteousness is specific to this particular administration and its attached cronies. The damage Bush has done is not going to be covered up with smoke and mirrors this time and I think the republican party is going to be better for having weeded out a great number of the problem players within it. I hope my prediction is accurate: the republican party is going to take the next presidential election and things will be done a whole lot differently with more focus on the really important issues. Dont think so? Consider another of Condi's answer when pressed about her views on gay marriage:
"This is an issue that can be debated and can be discussed in our country with respect for every human being," Rice told a newspaper interviewer.
"When we get into difficult debates about social policy, we get into difficult debates that touch people's lives; the only thing that I ask is that Americans do it with a kind of sensitivity that real individuals and real human beings are involved here," Rice said.

"This is not my area of expertise or, frankly, my area of concentration at this point."
