Condoleezza Rice urged the Southern Baptist Convention to show respect in the wake of the gay marriage debate's recent revival as a political maneuver on the part of George Bush and his neocon supporters. She is quoted as saying:

"This is an issue that can be debated and can be discussed in our country with respect for every human being," Rice told a newspaper interviewer.

"When we get into difficult debates about social policy, we get into difficult debates that touch people's lives; the only thing that I ask is that Americans do it with a kind of sensitivity that real individuals and real human beings are involved here," Rice said.

Hoping to deflect attention away from his foreign policy travesty in Iraq, Bush attempted to rally his ultra conservative base by championing the sanctity of marriage, supporting a constitutional amendment that would sharply and narrowly define marriage once and for all. The amendment was subsequently rejected by a large majority of the house...a republican controlled house, mind you.

Condoleezza's speech following the SBC address says two things to me. First is that this administration is not totally putrid. Condi, for example, has shown remarkable insight and sensitivity on all fronts while being saddled with the burden of supporting a labotomized president. Her comments today show that there is a moderate face to the Republican Party and that the whole party should not be held at fault for the sins of what has turned out to just plain be a bad president.

The second thing it tells me is that Bush is that the Bush mentality of invincibility and self righteousness is specific to this particular administration and its attached cronies. The damage Bush has done is not going to be covered up with smoke and mirrors this time and I think the republican party is going to be better for having weeded out a great number of the problem players within it. I hope my prediction is accurate: the republican party is going to take the next presidential election and things will be done a whole lot differently with more focus on the really important issues. Dont think so? Consider another of Condi's answer when pressed about her views on gay marriage:

"This is not my area of expertise or, frankly, my area of concentration at this point."

What foreign policy travesty? The man spent 5 hours and expressed his support for the goverment and came home. What other catastrophe happened?

Thursday, June 15, 2006

President's Press Conference on Iraq
President Bush (June 14): "I've just returned from Baghdad, and I was inspired to be able to visit the capital of a free and democratic Iraq. It was a pleasure to meet face-to-face with the Prime Minister. ... I saw firsthand the strength of his character and his deep determination to succeed, to build a country that can sustain itself, govern itself, and defend itself."

I agree with Condi that social policies are a touchy subject and no matter what someone will end up crying.

I was speaking in reference to the total policy in Iraq, not his most recent 5 hour visit.

Like what? The US should not have set 50 million people free to rule themselves?
Nevermind that debate belongs in a different thread anyway.

True, it does belong in a different thread. I dont disagree that the Iraqis have a right to rule themselves. I just think the whole job was botched and was very shady in its implementation.

LOL jallman, I am sure akyron knew that--he just needed to make himself feel better by pointing out something positive regarding Iraq because it is a complete downer for the Bush Administration.

I am happy to see Condoleezza say what she said.

What about those oppressed in China, Africa, North Korea, Saudi Arabia. Are we going to war with those countries as well to free the people? No, we aren't. In fact, with Saudi Arabia and China, we hate the fact that they oppress their people so much that WE DO BUSINESS WITH THEM.

The simple truth is we didn't go into Iraq to free their people. We went in there (Right or wrong) because we thought IRaq was a direct threat to us. Not to free their people. Had Sadaam shown documents and proven that he had destroyed his WMDs, we would not have invaded. So freeing the people was not the main reason we went to war with Iraq.

We went into Afghanistan because the Taliban would not turn over Osama Bin Ladin, not to free their people. If they had, we would have not invaded and we would have let the Taliban continue to rule. So freeing the people was not the main reason we went to war with the Taliban.

As for Rice, it seems quite interesting that the only time this Administration cares about marriage is in an election year. How convenient. This is a ploy to get the religous right back on with the Republicans and nothing more. The sad part is, it will work because it seems the religous right knows no other way. What is the main concerns with the religous right? God, marriage, and abortion. All the conservatives have to do is start talking about those three things during an election year and they have them hook, line, and sinker, everytime. They don't have to do anything about it either, just talk about it.

If they could address some real issue I'd even vote republic! I am just so sick of all these politicians skirting around or ignoring the real issues. Just get something done over there already!

I would definetly vote for Condi or Hilary any day. I would love to even have her run for vice president, just to get a foot in the door for a woman in there to clean house ;)

Common problem. Being SURE about something and inflicting opinions about it without gathering information first.
