Computer reads the internet - Learning has begun | TechEye

Carnegie Mellon University has taught a computer how to read and learn from the internet. According to Dennis Baron at the Oxford University press blog, the computer is called NELL and it is reading the internet and learning from it in much the same way that humans learn language and acquire knowledge. Basically by soaking it all up and figuring it out.

Hopefully this is the first step in a journey towards true AI.

We will be assimilated.

In all seriousness I'm curious how a computer would for example differentiate between different types of speech and data. For example how does it tell, like a person who can't do it 100% of the time anyway, the tone of something written on the internet, such as sarcasm, or anger, etc, which can completely change the meaning of words.
And how does it tell the difference between real and useful information and junk?

If it can't do that, whats to stop it from becoming just a copy of the internet, although smaller because it could never keep up with the changes and addition to information online. And how would a human user use this computer and its data, a search engine? So its going to be a half-copy of the internet with a poorer Google to use it? Or is there something more to it?

The Skynet Funding Bill is passed. The system goes on-line August 4th, 1997. Human decisions are removed from strategic defense. Skynet begins to learn at a geometric rate. It becomes self-aware at 2:14 a.m. Eastern time, August 29th. In a panic, they try to pull the plug...

I started with The Little Engine that Could. Damn computer upstaging us.
