Lots of people had the opportunity to intervene in this young man's life before he became a mass murderer. Yet no one did. The warning signs were there. We need to start taking mental health much more seriously in this country.
Unfortunately, we often only find out how "****ed up" a given person's situation is in this country because so many of us (and the media in general) are wholly focused on how we can make political hay out of absolutely everything. We only see people in political terms and we only see the circumstances of those people in political terms. There is no room left for humanity and even that term is used more for political virtue signalling than it is as recognition that in every situation there is a unique human being with unique needs, desires and dreams at the center. The more self centered we become the less important everyone around us becomes to us, the more others become tools for our own edification.
Being non binary isn't mutually exclusive with committing a hate crime. The aggressive, often violent conservative rhetoric surrounding drag shows and the LGBT community in general may not have directly caused this shooting. But it certainly didn't help prevent it either.New details emerge
