College Football 2020

Who wants to OP the 2021 College Football thread? Talk in Vegas and across the NFL is about the 4-team playoff being expanded to 12 teams.

Money talks from the sports channels, and imho, the entire sports world changed with the Supreme Court legalizing sports gambling, now up to 30 states.

I believe this was really about the NCAAF breaking up without expansion. Also lots of talk about schedules this year. Just like the NFL, who has the edge and who got a bad beat? This

This is 100% about money and nothing more. Teams outside the top 5 have almost zero chance of winning the national championship.

As long as all but 4 or 5 teams have a shot at the best players, sure. In two years as projected, players know that 12 teams will be in a playoff.

Of course Vegas is thrilled with this. Btw, Illinois is now #2 in handle behind New Jersey, followed by PA, Nevada, and MI. It’s mobile betting.

Teams outside the top 5 have little chance of winning a championship game on the field. Most years there's a team from one of the other conferences that manages to go 12-0 against lesser opponents. Fans of this team will make noise about how they should go to the playoffs. The team gets a bowl game against a decent Power Five team that was third in their conference - and loses.

Last year it was Coastal Carolina. 12-0, which was fantastic for such a new team. But they lost in their bowl game - to Liberty.
2018 it was UCF, who was ranked #8 and played #11 LSU. LSU's defense was so beat up that they were playing a wide receiver at a defensive back position. LSU decided to play ball control and their offensive line dominated UCF so thoroughly that LSU won the game with 44 minutes time of possession.
2016 it was Western Michigan. Lost in a bowl to Big Ten runner-up, 10-3 Wisconsin.

Occasionally a lower conference darling will break the pattern. In 2017 UCF beat Auburn by a touchdown. Does anyone think they would have won two games against any two of the top four teams that year - Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma and Clemson?

Much of it is about money, but not quite in the way you think it is. For some teams money has actually been a disadvantage. Have you ever wondered why Alabama has won so consistently in the Nick Saban area? Saban is a great coach, however there are loads of great coaches in College football. And Alabama had limited success in the era in between Coach Bear Bryant and Coach Saban. One of the biggest secrets to Saban's success is that he told Alabama that he would only take the job if he had complete control of the football program. That means no interference from wealthy alumni donors. Such interference kills many schools football programs. They constantly stick their two cents in and demand this or that and the head coach is hog tied. Saban has free reign of the program. Saban's offensive coordinator was hired by the Texas Longhorns at the end of last season as head coach. He is a great coach and I wish him success. However he will not have long term success unless the Longhorns keep the big donors off his back. They have a history of interfering with previous excellent head coaches.
