What type of 'connection' do religious people expect from other religious people and the church-leaders? Is there a standard of appropriate actions to take and so forth that should be adhered to - somewhat like some basic guidelines for church membership?

My Dad (is a minister - going on 40 years, now) expects people to keep the church up-to-date with contact info (phone number, address) . . . and he expects people to tell him why they decide to leave his church and go to another church, or stop attending church altogether.

All the years of him being my Dad - I still don't understand the 'church expectations' that he has of other people. One woman didn't tell him she was going to start attending another church, she just stopped showing up, and it nearly broke his heart.

I would say that some type of relationship exist here and the longer the relationship the more the expectations. Especially for small church communities, if a person decides to leave, that leaving could cause adjustment, lower social support, or even harm depending on the circumstances. The Church is not entertainment so I don't think your dad was out of line. People have to invest in each other.

I think it depends on the religion.

As a Pagan, we dont really have "churches" per say nor do we have religious leaders. The community is more of a camaraderie spirit, we support each other because we share similar beliefs and we are still a minority.

you may have hit on one of his problems
that woman continues to worship
only at another venue ... a church led by someone other than your dad
and that causes him personal anguish
