Arguing about who were the "conservatives" versus the "progressives" in the 1860s is like talking arguing about which nations were socialist versus capitalist during the Middle Ages. It makes little sense because these did not exist as coherent ideologies, much less political movements at the time.

The Progressive movement in the United States began in the 1890s, and it was not a ported-over European socialist workers movement in disguise, but a uniquely American movement that involved affected all strata of society (and both the political left and political right for a time). While it concerned itself with bettering labor conditions, it was neither a workers' class movement nor a counterrevolution of the elites, but a distinctly middle class movement. Good Lord, enough of the drama, already!!! Abortion rights were simply handed back to the States where they were, back closer to the people to decide. I'm a tad uncomfortable with the word 'fascist' when used in a broad context. My own preference is to use words such as 'authoritarian' and the phrase 'single party state'.

An accurate appraisal of where some members of the Republican Party wish to go is presented in their own words in the Texas 2022 party platform.* It is worth while reading. I read it in the context of a checklist of the steps that other factions** had taken in the past to overthrow existing democratic governments and are currently being used in countries such as Hungary to the same ends.

Note in particular lines 127-8. They seek a return to the year 1911. Lines 204-6, combined with gerrymandering, can help to insure one-party rule. The intent to destroy some of our existing federal institutions is also detailed in the document.

I believe it to be recommended reading for those who are interested in the overall goals of our political parties.
