HONG KONG -- Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam on Monday said the city's government “fully welcomes” changes to the city’s electoral system that will substantially increase central government control over Hong Kong politics and exclude critics of Beijing.

Chinese authorities have said the draft decision before China's National People’s Congress would mean the largely pro-Beijing committee that elects Hong Kong’s leader would also choose a large part of the legislature to ensure the city is run by “patriots.” The Election Committee would also have the right to vet candidates for the Legislative Council, weeding out any people suspected of being insufficiently loyal to China and the ruling Communist Party.

Well...it's done:

Hong Kong has passed a controversial electoral reform law, aimed at keeping people China deems "unpatriotic" from positions of political power.

The reform will allow a pro-China panel to vet and elect candidates, reducing democratic representation.

Critics warn it is designed to remove all opposition from the city's parliament, allowing Beijing to tighten its control over Hong Kong.

"Today, we pay tribute to the brave Chinese people, whose peaceful pursuit of freedom and democracy was brutally suppressed in Tiananmen Square in 1989."

Every year, american capitalist propagandists complain, that they failed to give the chinese people "freedom", which they would have enjoyed on the same level of underdevelopment as Ukraine and would have died en masse from coronavirus, as in India, but instead China develops vaccines and buys entire industrial regions all over the world...
