Chinese importers have purchased 1.5 million to 2 million metric tons of American soy over the last 24 hours, the U.S. Soybean Export Council said, citing industry sources. The shipments are expected to occur sometime during the first quarter, Jim Sutter, chief executive officer of the council, confirmed by phone and email. Most of the supplies will be shipped from terminals in the Pacific Northwest.

China is making its first sizable purchase of U.S. soy since the two countries began a series of tit-for-tat tariffs. Soybean futures had stayed relatively quiet in the last few days as traders awaited confirmation that big deals were happening. Donald Trump said in an Oval Office interview with Reuters Tuesday that he’d heard China is “buying tremendous amounts of soybeans” from American suppliers.

Is the order "good news?" Of course, it is. Sales always are. Is it material or portending of something? That remains to be seen.

It's also something they typically buy from us. I would not make yoo much of it. It's a positive that they not completely boycotting us but it may be out of necessity on their end more than a goodwill gesture

Our Mid West ag economy is entirely too dependent upon volume in just a few crops. Diversification into multiple crops would be more labor intensive to the farmers but healthier to them in the long run.

Did it ever occur to you that the crops being produced now are based on what works well for the region? And that to change a crop completely would requite a complete retooling of farm machinery that plants, fertilizes, and harvests?

Did you happen to notice that the Soybeans were sold for around $8.00/bushel as opposed to the around $10.50/bushel that they were selling for back in April?

Did you happen to notice that the average (over the past five years) cost of raising a bushel of Soybeans has been around $10.68?

Is it a "Good Thing" or a "Bad Thing" to sell more of your product at a loss?

Look at the bright side. Farmers will cut back on soybeans, so when the Chinese resume buying larger quantites, the prices will be higher, and due to the risk factor of China holding them hostage again, farmers will be reluctant to plant as much keeping a higher floor under pricing.

Anyone is business knows you don’t screw your suppliers.
