China has banned government use of Windows 8, Microsoft Corp.’s latest operating system (OS), in a blow to the US technology company which has long been plagued by sales woes in the country.
The central government procurement centre issued the ban on installing Windows 8 as part of a notice on the use of energy-saving products, posted on its website last week.
Neither the government nor Xinhua elaborated on how the ban supported the use of energy-saving products, or how it ensured security.
I am still rocking XP for a couple of my computers. I like it far more than 7 or 8.
dinosaur.

I think we should all follow China's lead on this one.
I was curious as well as to how the product was energy-saving.
I use my computers for CAD (engineered drawings). XP runs the program well. My experience with 7 & 8 is that CAD crashes at very random times.
Also, XP is great for gaming. And it is energy efficient according to the Chinese government.
I'd go along with every company's IT banning it. It seems to be a productivity killer. I don't know many large corps with touch-screen workstations. Stupid move by MS.China bans government use of Windows 8 - Livemint

I know what CAD is.
You know xp is no longer supported by microsoft.
The factual reason for the ban by China would be the well known NSA backdoor into the operating systems provided by Microsoft for USA intelligence Agencies.
not sure what version i'm using. here's my home screen :

I still use XP. Perhaps with this Chinese decision they may re-support Xp again.
You wish you were that old.
Well, I did head off to college rocking 3.1 with a 386, a 40 mb hard drive, no sound card, and a 2400 baud modem*.
*my awesome folks promptly upgraded me to a soundblaster, 100 mb hard drive, and 14.4 k baud. And the year after that, it was pentium 60. My folks are pretty great. I can still feel the excitement of finding a new local BBS to download shareware from. 14.4 baud felt like lightning speed after 2400. And then ethernet a couple years later? That was like landing on the moon.

I hope Microsoft tells China to go **** itself.
the fact is microsoft shot itself in the head with windows 8.
i don't nkow very many corporations that are leaving 7 after the upgrade from xp.
i know my company only orders windows 7 boxes.
windows 9 doens't look to be anymore promising just what windows 8 probably should have been.
until they come out with another windows xp/7 model they are going to have a hard time getting anyone but consumers to switch.
