The Black Ghetto on the Southside of Chicago has been a White man created and enforced segregated community since the 1920's.
Restrictive covenants were introduced in the 1920s. By the 1940s, Chicago led the nation in their use. Racial deed restrictions covered approximately half of the city's residential neighborhoods. Together, the bombings, "neighborhood improvement associations," realtors' sales policies, and restrictive covenants helped create Chicago's first all-black ghetto on the city's South Side. As historian Allan H. Spear explains, the ghettoization of Chicago's blacks "was not the result chiefly of poverty; nor did Negroes cluster out of choice. The ghetto was primarily the product of white hostility..."

The hands that forged the American ghettoes are ours--and they are blood-stained. To claim that the ghettoes of Chicago, and all the violent deaths that flow from them, are the creation of white racism is not to make an overheated charge. It is to cite the historical record.

...Trayvon Martin was killed close to home. He was killed by someone whom he lived around. His hoodie marked him, as surely as any gang color ever marked anyone. He was watched by George Zimmerman in the exact same way that I, and all my friends, were watched when we strayed into some other neighborhood. Indeed, one thinks of George Zimmerman's attitude and can't help but hear the moans of Kendrick Lamar ("Where your grandma stay, huh, my nigga?") And finally Martin was killed in a way that is very familiar to a lot of us: a sucker goes looking for trouble, finds it, and shoots his way out of an ass-kicking.

There are no fair ones in America. Recent events have born this out. Here is George Zimmerman speeding through town. Here is George Zimmerman touring the company that allowed him to take your son's life. Smile for the cameras, George. Here is George Zimmerman menacing his wife and then smashing the evidence. George Zimmerman claims his wife's father attacked him. Someone is always attacking George Zimmerman.

In the 1920s.. southside was a very successful area.. with black businesses and many professionals.. as well as a café society and a great music scene.

How did you transition from black ghettos to George Zimmerman? Magic wand?

Perhaps it was. At one time, Chicago had countless jobs, many of them on the Southside and in Northern Indiana. Times changed...but Blacks remained trapped in those dying areas. Whites kept them in there like Nazis enforcing the perimeter around Warsaw.

The tactics endorsed by these improvement associations were nonviolent--until they weren't. Airport Homes, Cicero, Fernwood all testify to the fact that the borders of the ghetto were patrolled not just by government policy but by the willingness of individual white citizens to resort to violence.

Short answer: Read the article.

Long Answer: Trayvon was shot for venturing out of the Ghetto where his skin color and hoodie marked him as surely as the yellow star marked a Jew venturing out of Warsaw.

Section 8 housing is all over suburban Chicago and the city of Chicago. All kinds of rental properties throughout the area. There is no excuse for people staying there now except that it's their home.

Actually those educated blacks who moved north from cities like Atlanta, Memphis etc.. were school teachers, lawyers, doctors, merchants.. within a generation they moved into the suburbs. The wave or black immigration that followed were rural blacks who were illiterate and had a penchant for large families.

The history of Chicago is fascinating.

Trayvon wasn't from a ghetto.. He was from Miami Gardens.

Still. You have predominantly Black "burbs, especially west of the city. Neighborhoods like Maywood, Bellwood, Melrose Park were buffered by a few integrated ones like Oak Park, Forest Park and to a lesser extent Westchester, which separated the Blacks from areas which were nearly 100% white like Cicero, Berwyn and Riverside.

Around 1950 these were white burbs.

How the hell did a chicago black neighborhood transition into a black kid being shot in florida by a latino?

Trayvon wasn't from a ghetto.. He was from Miami Gardens.

He was hounded by Zimmerman because he was a Black who dared to be walking through his neighborhood at night. Typical sunset rule violation. And, it cost him his life.

Haven't you realized yet that George is dumb as a post?

The community of the Retreat was 20% black.

How do you know these things? are you a psychic? Honestly dude, the guy was found not guilty. I'm not saying that guy is the sharpest pencil in the box, but he is innocent.

Tell you what. Why don't you fulfill that wet dream of yours and sanctify trayvon martin. Just make a church in honor of trayvon martin. Chances are half the USA will join you since that's a roughly how many people have sold their brains to the fanatic club. Easy pickings. Put a 50$ tax on it and you'll become a rich man over night.

Shows ignorance of the event and the people involved. Not even close to the facts of the matter. Really, give it up. We all know some folks really, really wanted this to be about race. The talking heads have done everything they could to make it so. But in the end the facts showed the race players for the fools they are.

Black people can live wherever they can afford to live. As a Realtor, I'm here to tell you that there is no discrimination against blacks in the housing market. Was there at one time? Yes. Just like there was discrimination against Jews, Italians, Chinese, etc., etc. in our past. But no more.

A young black man faces far more danger walking in his own inner-city neighborhood than anywhere else on the planet -- except perhaps a war zone.

The article puts the Trayvon murder in context with the enforcement used to keep Blacks in the Ghetto.

Hard to live where one chooses if they can't get a mortgage.
The FHA embraced these biases. It collected detailed maps of the present and likely future location of African Americans, and used them to determine which neighborhoods would be denied mortgage insurance. Since banks and savings and loan institutions often relied upon FHA rating maps when deciding where to grant their mortgages, the FHA's appraisal policies meant that blacks were excluded by definition from most mortgage loans. The FHA's Underwriting Manual also praised restrictive covenants as "the surest protection against undesirable encroachment" of "inharmonious racial groups." The FHA did not simply recommend the use of restrictive covenants but often insisted upon them as a condition for granting mortgage insurance.

Yes, because the article was written by an idiot.

I nominate this for the most ridiculous article of the month.

Since at least 1968, this kind of discrimination has been illegal. If your source is even credible in the first place.

If you're looking for excuses for why the black man feels put upon, you can surely find them in our history. But that was then, and this is now. In fact, now? The pendulum has swung in the other directiion. Even perceived discrimination in a real estate transaction is going to cost some poor sap his life savings defending himself against the strong arm of a determined government.
