Around 2% of all COVID deaths this year were breakthrough cases.
In addition, almost as many officers have died from COVID in 2021 as in 2020 -- and we have 2 1/2 months to go.
In other words, there is
no question whatsoever that the safest thing they can do, for themselves and the public, is get vaccinated.
From what I can tell, some wore masks and washed hands. Some resisted mask mandates. I don't see any indication that they closed police stations, moved meetings outdoors, or otherwise practiced social distancing.
More to the point: Masks, social distancing, frequent hand washing etc are
not valid alternatives to vaccination for society as a whole. While they are effective -- as the example of Australia clearly shows -- they are only a stopgap until we can get enough people vaccinated.
Again: There is
no question whatsoever that the safest thing they can do, for themselves and the public, is get vaccinated.
If you actually care about the lives of police officers, then you should be doing everything you can, including endorsing mandates, to get them to vaccinate.
