(Reuters) - Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot on Monday loosened COVID-19-related capacity restrictions for businesses such as bars, restaurants and health clubs, a move that will go into effect later this week.

The new guidelines, which will take effect on Thursday, will increase indoor capacity to 40% for certain businesses, reopen bars for indoor service and increase maximum group sizes for fitness classes and after-school programming, a statement from the mayor’s office said.

Crazy. We'll all die from this virus if they keep loosening the indoor capacity regs.

We may get a few more infections but to say we'll all die is stupid. AZ has a bunch of businesses open including bars at reduced capacity and our numbers are staying low. A few places have been shut down but for the most part businesses know they need to follow the rules. Keeping businesses shut down at this point will cause more deaths than C19.

It's called hyperbole. You seem to have missed my earlier post about covid infections increasing in 27 states. And we aren't in cold weather yet. We need to tighten up rather than loosen the capacity regs.

The threat though is commensurate with the environment. The dense urban environment of Chicago or NYC is much different than AZ. Not saying I don't agree with you in a general sense - we've got to take reasonable risk. But in specific terms, each locale as to act in their individual best interest.

The problem is that many businesses/industries/livelihoods are at a tipping point. You've argued that you don't think a vaccine is coming any time soon. These businesses can't continue to operate at the capacity they currently are for much longer. At what point should they loosen capacity regs? I think they can do it now if they are doing it safely. It would be better if all people got on board with this and helped to keep the numbers low. Unfortunately, there are too many ego's out there who want to fight against the science.

Between covid & the flu, we risk having our hospitals overwhelmed this winter which means more will die. We should have a countrywide mask mandate & tighten the capacity restrictions instead of loosening them.

The vaccine will be skipped by a majority until they find out that it is working & not making people sick. And the question as to whether the vaccines will work is still an open question. No one has developed a coronavirus vaccine to date because this is a very tough virus that has ways of turning off your immune system. The people who skip the vaccine run the risk of continuing the pandemic spread of the virus. And with all vaccines, it takes about a month to have it build up full immunity. If you get infected before that, you're in trouble. this virus will turn off your ability to make antibodies, effectively neutralizing the vaccine.

It took me weeks of reading a virology textbook to figure out just part of how this virus works. It's very complicated. It is a string of proteins, some of which are enzymes. NSP-1 enzyme binds to the S40 subunit of your ribosomes & blocks the manufacture of host cell proteins, including antibodies. IOW, good luck.

Each locale is unique, though. Chicago (Cook County) is highly reactionary, in that they test pretty prodigiously (free & on immediate demand), and the government quickly reacts to rising or concerning data by adjusting public policy. Consequently, the number of daily infected has been remarkably steady for months. It's higher than I'd like (1,500/day), but rock steady. Ditto for deaths.

It seems Lightfoot et al have determined they can live with that number. I have faith in them they will not exceed that number, since they clamp down in specific fashion at the slightest inking of problems.

It's not an easy decision to make but there are other factors that come into play like the viability of some businesses to survive. NYC is also easing some restrictions because as we go into the colder seasons, restaurants/bars and other indoor businesses will likely not be able to remain open at existing capacity restrictions. I suspect Lightfoot will roll back these measures if cases start spiking dramatically.

Yes, and with cold weather approaching more folk will be spending time in closed environments, adding to their vulnerability to infection.
