There were rumors about Chavez seeking an indefinite term of office earlier. It appears that's an increasing possibility given this story.

If it looks like a dictatorship, talks like a dictatorship, and acts like a dictatorship . . . .

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said Saturday that he would hold a referendum asking the Venezuelans to decide whether he should extend his presidency until 2031 if the opposition pull out of December's presidential election.

"I am going to call a referendum. I am going to ask you, all the people if you agree with Chavez being president until 2031," said Chavez at a stadium to his supporters in the central Lara state.

Poll results show Chavez will probably win the December vote. Four government opponents have announced to run against Chavez, but no single opposition candidate has been chosen yet.

Not the first time this has come up and it is only a half truth. The opposition have been playing the spolit kid rutine when it came to the presidency and elections because they know they will lose and it aint because Chavez will "rig" the election (which they will of course claim). Facts are that the only way the opposition will win the elections is by rigging them themselvs like they did for decades.

All Chavez is doing is calling thier bluff.. granted it could mean a dictatorship but its likely he would win any election on the fair and square anyways.. he is after all very popular among the poor and lower middle class.

Not for long, military spending is not what the "the poor and lower middle class" are looking for, I mean, who is attacking them?

You have played your hand here, you admit that you would support a dictatorship, something I know the people do not favor.

All Hail Gaius Julius Chavez! Imperator of Venezuela! *gag*

Umh, well I don't know about the half truth part - which part is that?
  1. 1. He's been in power since 1999.
  2. 2. The consitution was rewritten so that he could serve two terms
  3. 3. The Supreme Court recently ruled that his first term didn't count :doh because it was under the old constitution (which means he could serve until 2012 if he wins.
    [*}4. He's 52 years old, so in 2031, he'll be about 77.

Now don't think it sounds like he might have dicator like tendencies?:

i dont see what the big deal is. If the electorate do not want him in power they can call a referendum on his presidency and vote him out.

:doh dictators aren't elected. Amzing how the right will call anything they don't like a dictatorship. Chavez was overwhelmingly elected by the people, which is more than Bush can say.

All this is is a challenge to opponents to not concede because they have no support, and then claim the election was undemocratic.

look at the snippet you posted

Essentially this has come before the primaries...

Umm... that's not exactly solid ground you're standing on there is it LH? Haven't we forgotten somebody? Bavarian chap, unusual moustache, ring any bells?

I know it's only a small thing, insignificant really, but he did get into power via the democratic process. Tiny technicality, sorry for bringing it up.:2wave:

Who Stalin? This is completely different. Everyone is allowed to run. Opposition is allowed. This is a challenge to the opposition to not concede before the election like they did in '04 and then call him a dictator for winning.

Not like an American "President" hasn't appeared to be a dictator, I mean, that would be dreadful!

He was Austrian, not Bavarian, admittedly born close to the border, but Austrian.

No, this would be a Georgian.

The above topic is why Chavez needs a dirtnap!

Even if Chavez HAS been elected democratically, he's certainly allying himself with the dictatorships of the world. I'm talking Cuba and Iran. I think that's a good enough reason not to like this guy.

There was a referendum in 2004 deciding weither or not he should stqy in office. He won with an overwhelming majority. As of now he has high approval ratings. I don`t think he`s really aligning himself with Iran.

So if the people want a dictator then dictatorships are okay?

He`s not a dictator. You may like to think that anyone or thing anti-capitalist is a dictatorship but that`s simply false.

He' doing one heck of a job of faking it then.

“We stand by Iran at every moment, in any situation,” Mr. Chávez said in Tehran, where he received the golden High Medallion of the Islamic Republic from President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Venezuela, Syria and Cuba were the only countries to oppose referring Iran to the United Nations Security Council at a meeting in February of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

TEHRAN, Iran Jul 30, 2006 (AP)— Iran awarded Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez its highest state medal on Sunday for supporting Tehran in its nuclear standoff with the international community, while Chavez urged the world to rise up and defeat the U.S., state-run media in both countries reported.

The leftist Venezuelan leader also condemned Israel for what he called the "terrorism" and "madness" of its attacks in Lebanon, Venezuelan state television reported.

"Let's save the human race, let's finish off the U.S. empire," Chavez said. "This (task) must be assumed with strength by the majority of the peoples of the world."

I think we need to send in the assassination squads. It's time for chaves to be six feet under.

I loathe and dispise being so extreme; however, with people like Chaves there really is no other way.

Again, extreme mesures are needed to control extreme tyranny. It's time for Hugo (which means juice in spanish) Chavez to be introduced to a bullet through his skull.

That's a rather liberal view isn't it? He's a terrorist supporter... so neutralizing his lame *** is not really an act of terrorism. Removing terrorists are there supporters by any means necessary is NOT terrorism (not like blowing one's self up in a public place or flying a plane into a building); it's an act of self-defense on the part of a country that is tired of being attacked by jealous, murderous, zealous, islam-o-facist scumbags and their bend over buddies.

Chavez is a dictator who is guilty of election fraud on a massive scale.

You seam very fantically opossed to terroism considering its farily low on the list of threats to america's people. More people have been killed by penuts in america then terroists [due to allergic reactions] Indeed far more people died in huricane katrina then in 9/11 so if your concerned about threats to amerca then its global warming you should be worrying about [that and penuts]

Which terroists has chaves supported? I dont see how the american government has any highground in denouceing governments for supporting terroism. This is because the american government has probably supported more terroists then any other state.

The C.I.A has been involved in the overthrow of over 10 legitimate democratic governments in latin america. The regimes replaceing them have some of the worst human rights records in history so if thats not supporting terroism i dont know what is.
