Charlie Rangel Found Guilty on 11 of 13 Ethics Charges - CBS News

A House ethics committee subpanel today found Democratic Rep. Charlie Rangel guilty of 11 of the 13 charges of ethics violations against him.
The panel, composed of four Democrats and four Republicans, emerged after private deliberation to announce their findings.
"This has been a difficult assignment," committee chair Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) said. "We have tried to act with fairness, led only by the facts and the law, and I believe we have accomplished that mission."
The subpanel will now submit its findings to the full ethics committee, which will schedule a public hearing to determine the appropriate sanctions to take against the longtime New York representative. Whatever action they decide on during the sanctions hearing will then go to the full House of Representatives. The committee could go so far as to recommend expelling Rangel, but that would be unlikely. Other possible sanctions include a House vote deploring Rangel's conduct, a fine or a denial of privileges.
The subpanel's decision comes after a two-year long investigation into charges against Rangel that relate to his personal finances and his fundraising efforts for a new center at New York City College. The trial marked a rare event: In the two decades since the House's ethics procedures were adopted, only former Rep. James Traficant (D-Ohio) faced a similar trial. He was expelled from Congress after being convicted of 10 felony counts.

Rangel, longtime hero of the Democratic Party, caught with his hands in the cookie jar. He's always been a weasel. Unfortunately the worst that could happen to him is retirement with full benefits. Never like that crooked weasel, can you tell?

I was criticized in another thread on that specific issue. The criticizer said that it was like years ago.

It takes the House Ethics committee years and years to make up it's collective mind? What good is that for an enforcement arm?

Is there something new to this story? I mean we all knew that Charlie was little more than a grifter.

yea for years... he was found in violation of soliciting gifts and donations for his center and for political actions. he of course denied it.
Yet he a past quote from him "We love the ability of the people to influence the actions of decision-makers, of lawmakers and presidents to be removed from or elevated to office by the will of voters.."
Apparently when Rangel says 'the people' he means people who give him money and gifts.

Indeed. Inside the DC reality distortion field that surrounds both the congress and the White house he appears to be fine noble man with ethics and good standing. Step out of that reality distortion field and he's just not.

It doesn't matter anyway. He's retiring....this is his last year as a congressman.

just as someone who gets dishonorably discharged from the military the congress should make him forfeit his pension and post congress benefits
as his punishment.

unless we have a double standard.

Wait...isnt this an old news story? I mean...isnt this the third or fourth time this has happened?

Charlie is the guy that says citizens (victims of crime) dont need armed protection, politicians do. Gotta love him. And he will get reelected as long as he runs.

And yet, he escapes the justice he deserves. I don't see how that 'doesn't matter'.

... Rangel walked out of the proceedings in protest because he has been unable to acquire legal representation. Rangel's legal team dropped the case this fall, reportedly after disagreements with Rangel over their defense strategy, and the lawmaker insists he neither has the money to find new counsel nor the time to set up a legal defense fund. ...
since last fall, unable to secure legal representation
yea, that's credible

hope they expel his ass and deny him a congressional pension due to his termination

ditto for maxine walters, who is next up before the ethics committee

and before he leaves, initiate an ethics investigation for harry reid, to expose his self dealing in land trades of government property for privately owned property, unfairly enriching that bastard at the public's expense

Well of course, that would be too reasonable.

they will issue another censure just like they did for his tax evasion.
he should have been disimissed then and there.

sick of these people ignoring the laws that everyone else has to follow.
then people wonder why we as American's dont' trust our government.

...and yet he could run again, and still get 95 percent of the vote.

Democrats don't care.

*ahem* David Vitter *ahem*

You may now carry on with your ridiculously narrow, partisan rant.

Marion Berry and Al Sharpton say hello.

We can go back and forth creating a list. The difference is I didn't say something silly like "Dems don't care" implying the Republicans do. I can recognize Dems that screw up need to pay. But when A GOP official gets busted and a thread is created, it's generally all but vacant of our conservative posters in here.

I will never be accused of being an apologist for Democrats, but I'm pretty sure the party tried to get him not to run in the last election because of these charges and he was overwhelmingly re-upped by the local party apparatus and overwhelmingly returned by the people who voted in his district. He's black and he's a Democrat - that's all they need to know in his district. He could be a serial killer and as long as he's black and a Democrat he'd win.

The indictment should not be on Rangel and/or the Democrats - it should be on the voters in his district who promote and reward corruption in their representative.

If Charlie needs a job he could call his good friend Hillary. The Clinton Foundation could use another honest man like Charlie on their staff.

If anything happens to Rangel there will b e riots in Harlem.

Rangel is their pet.

I'd say life in a dumpster would be suitable for this tax-dodging crook.
