Speaking Wednesday at the dedication of an Army museum, General Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff obliquely confronted any idea that Trump might have of attempting to use our military to stay in power beyond January 20, 2021.
“We are unique among militaries,” said Gen. Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. “We do not take an oath to a king or a queen, a tyrant or a dictator. We do not take an oath to an individual.
We take an oath to the Constitution,” Milley said, adding that every service member “will protect and defend that document regardless of personal price.”
This isn’t the first time General Milley has addressed the possibility. In August, General Milley responded to questions by legislators concerned about the possibility of military involvement in the upcoming presidential election.
General Milley responded, saying “I believe deeply in the principle of an apolitical U.S. military,” Milley said in written responses to several questions posed by two Democratic members of the House Armed Services Committee. “In the event of a dispute over some aspect of the elections, by law U.S. courts and the U.S. Congress are required to resolve any disputes, not the U.S. military. I foresee no role for the U.S armed forces in this process.”
It is both shocking and utterly appalling that our nation’s highest ranking military leader would be compelled, by the words and actions of a sitting Commander-in-Chief, to reassure Americans that our military will not allow itself to be misused in any attempt to usurp our Constitution.

Military wary that shakeup could upend its apolitical nature
WASHINGTON (AP) — The words spoken by America's top military officer carried a familiar ring, but in the midst of a chaotic week at the Pentagon, they were particularly poignant.
