Ceiling fan stopped working??

We have a Hampton Bay ceiling fan. (Actually, we have 5 of them, but only one wasn't working.) The models we have only work with a remote -- there's no on/off switch. Suddenly, the one in our living room stopped working. And OH!! Do we miss that! It's a dimmer light as well. Comes in very handy and saves tons on air conditioning.

So, I did the only three things I know how to do:

#1 -- changed the batteries. Nope.
#2 -- banged it on the table a few times. Nope.
#3 -- read the instructions

The instructions talked about dip switches. There are four of them. Jesus. I've been CALLED a dip switch in the past. (At least I thought they said dip switch.) And you had to take the fan apart in order to find the dip switch setting for your particular remote. Lordy.

So. I Googled "how many combinations are there for four dip switches?" And, lo and behold, I got an answer.

Just FYI, it's 16. A lot easier to do than taking the fan apart, for God's sake. Someone on that forum that gave me the answer was also kind enough to list those 16. So I tried them all. On the 10th one?? YIPPEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fan/light working just fine. Woot!!!!!

That's binary :). It was beaten in me during college.
If you ever forget, use this simple rule

1+1 = 10

So if you have 0001 = 1
0001+ 0001 = 0010 = 2
0010 + 0001 = 0011 = 3
0011+ 0001 = 0100 = 4

Alternative, you can remember that 0111 = 7 which is the 8th number in binary, because 0000 = 0 and it's the first.
And 1000 = 8
1111= 15
10000= 16

:lol: Glad you found it. I would have complained and replaced the whole fan.
 
When remotes are required in place of a simple switch then I have no simpathy. Why not hire a servant to push the buttons?

Really? Well, how would one have four fan speeds, reverse control and an infinite number of light settings without a remote. Unless the remote is mounted on the wall. It's not just a simple on/off switch ya' know. (You must not have a modern ceiling fan.)

One could also just remember that, starting with the 0th power, the different positions represent the digit * the base, to the nth power. E.g. 1110 == 1*2^3+1*2^2+1*2^1+0*2^0 == 8+4+2 == 14.
