Fidel Castro criticized Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for denying the Holocaust and advocated global nuclear disarmament, specifically recommending to Israel that the only way it can achieve security is through dropping its nuclear arsenal, in an interview published online Tuesday.

Cuba's revolutionary leader also discouraged the United States and Israel from using sanctions and threats as a strategy to deter Iran from pursuing nuclear weapons of its own, The Atlantic magazine reported on its website.

"This problem is not going to get resolved, because the Iranians are not going to back down in the face of threats," Castro told the magazine.

The Atlantic's Jeffrey Goldberg spent three days in Cuba interviewing Castro, describing him as "frail and aged" -- two bodyguards held the former leader by the elbow when Castro greeted Goldberg -- along with an "acute" mind, "high" energy level and "a self-deprecating sense of humor."

Castro advised Ahmadinejad, a repeated Holocaust denier, to understand the "unique" history of anti-Semitism.

"I don't think anyone has been slandered more than the Jews," Castro told the magazine. "I would say much more than the Muslims. They have been slandered much more than the Muslims because they are blamed and slandered for everything. No one blames the Muslims for anything.
"The Jews have lived an existence that is much harder than ours," Castro told the magazine. "There is nothing that compares to the Holocaust."

Castro's comments come the week of Rosh Hashana, the Jewish new year. His remarks also came less than three weeks before the U.N. General Assembly is scheduled to convene in New York Sept. 23. Ahmadinejad has attended the annual meeting of world leaders representing Iran, which is a U.N. member.

Before last year's meeting, Ahmadinejad said he was proud that denying the Holocaust had angered Western governments.

This “new” Castro, friend of the Jews, is the same that signed one of his "reflections" in June, where he stated that "Israel will pull the trigger to bring Iran into the Stone Age, and this outrageous' and `anti-Semitic statement:

“The hatred felt by the state of Israel against the Palestinians is such that they would not hesitate to send the 1 ½ million men, women and children of that country to the crematoria where millions of Jews of all ages were exterminated by the Nazis” Castro said. “It would seem that the Fuehrer's swastika is today Israel's banner,” he said, referencing Adolf Hitler.

Can we believe in the sincerity of Castro? Of course not, he is known to say everything and its opposite, using dialectical tricks. But what is significant in this new twist is Castro's tactical change, expressed also in regard to Muslims. What he said is that in fact the Jews are the victims not the Muslims.

Castro visited Iran in May of 2001, where he said that “Iran and Cuba, in cooperation with each other, can bring America to its knees.” And now he has eroded this alliance, he has double crossed the Iranian regime.

You know, I've never really understood why conservatives like to eat babies so much. I find that just reprehensible. They just love to eat children. Kill them and eat them. Also, I hate how conservatives keep claiming the moon is made out of cheese. That's really annoying how they keep saying that, since the moon is clearly not made of cheese.

People do change. I remember seeing George Wallace on TV, standing on the steps of a school, proclaiming that no black student would ever attend a white school. Later on, he became a very vocal supporter of civil rights.

No liberal on this post has said a damn thing about either of these men being great or admirable. It's not shady at all. He's dying. How many memoirs are written on "death beds" and seem to deliver more truth than life long conviction? Even Haled al Azm, the Syrian Prime Minister in 1948-49, wrote in his memoirs decades later that it was Arabs that instructed Palestinians to leave their homes, not Jews. Before his "wisdom" years, he was not admitting ****. Castro starred in a role he was not allowed to get out of. He put the U.S. on the wrong side early and he was more than happy to play that part down through the decades. In the end, perhaps he wishes to be remembered as not quite the asshole.
