Capitol Police Told to Hold Back on Riot Response on Jan. 6, Report Finds
Despite being tipped that “Congress itself is the target” on Jan. 6, Capitol Police were ordered not to use their most powerful crowd-control weapons, according to a scathing new watchdog report.

The report offers the most devastating account to date of the lapses and miscalculations around the most violent attack on the Capitol in two centuries.

WASHINGTON — The Capitol Police had clearer advance warnings about the Jan. 6 attack than were previously known, including the potential for violence in which “Congress itself is the target.” But officers were instructed by their leaders not to use their most aggressive tactics to hold off the mob, according to a scathing new report by the agency’s internal investigator.

Mr. Bolton found that the agency’s leaders failed to adequately prepare despite explicit warnings that pro-Trump extremists posed a threat to law enforcement and civilians and that the police used defective protective equipment. He also found that the leaders ordered their Civil Disturbance Unit to refrain from using its most powerful crowd-control tools — like stun grenades — to put down the onslaught.

Three days before the siege, a Capitol Police intelligence assessment warned of violence from supporters of President Donald J. Trump who believed his false claims that the election had been stolen. Some had even posted a map of the Capitol complex’s tunnel system on pro-Trump message boards.

“Unlike previous post-election protests, the targets of the pro-Trump supporters are not necessarily the counter-protesters as they were previously, but rather Congress itself is the target on the 6th,” the threat assessment said, according to the inspector general’s report. “Stop the Steal’s propensity to attract white supremacists, militia members, and others who actively promote violence may lead to a significantly dangerous situation for law enforcement and the general public alike.”

If there is a second attempt at this type of insurrection, I damned well hope the cops are prepared to use all the force necessary to end it quickly.

Riot gear, stun grenades, tear gas and so on, yes, as they should have done this time.

Failure to appropriately use the resources at their disposal on one occasion should certainly not become an excuse to give them even more resources or discretionary powers on the next! Especially since law enforcement historically use heavy-handed measures more often against left-wing demonstrators (both peaceful and destructive) than against comparable right-wing demonstrators, a soft touch against this right-wing mob should not become the excuse for even more aggression against a future left-wing one!

If the above statement is accurate how was the officer that killed that defenseless woman exonerated because he clearly ignored his order to NOT act aggressively?

Because by that time it had gotten so bad, the cops felt out of control. Nothing like a bullet to the head to re-establish control. I totally agree with the outcome of the investigation. Nothing.

When was the last time an unarmed left-wing protestor was shot in the US?

When was the last time an unarmed left-wing protestor was shot in the US?

when was the last time an unarmed left-wing protestor stormed the capitol and tried to bust through a blockade of folks protecting senators.

good thing to know you supported the anti-American insurrection that trump instigated on Jan 6th. Your ilk belongs in jail.

I don't know about the most recent occasion, but if you wanted you could easily find a short-list of police violence incidents related to recent protests against police brutality.

I selected just a fraction (about one quarter I'd hazard) which seem particularly noteworthy for their use of force potentially and in some cases actually causing death or permanent serious injury, for their targeting of journalists and other observers, for their wanton destruction of property or medical supplies and for their targeting of particularly vulnerable children, elderly or pregnant people... but as it turns out the character limit will only allow me to highlight a few:

May 28, 2020Houston, TXA Houston Police Department officer riding a horse was filmed trampling a woman. Mayor Sylvester Turner apologized for the incident.[8][9]

May 29, 2020Minneapolis, MNJournalist and author Linda Tirado was permanently blinded in one eye after police shot her with a non-lethal projectile.[20]

May 30, 2020Dallas, TXBrandon Saenz, a 26-year-old black man, was at a protest outside City Hall when he was shot in the face by police. The projectile shattered the victim's left eye.[41]

May 30, 2020Denver, COA non-protester was blinded in one eye after being struck by a police projectile. The victim was walking to his car when he was reportedly shot in the eye, drive-by style, by police.[43]

May 30, 2020Fort Wayne, INProtester shot in one eye and blinded by police.[46]

May 30, 2020San Diego, CAPolice shot a 53-year old protester between the eyes with a projectile. The victim was placed in a medically-induced coma and was listed at risk for losing an eye.[69]

May 30, 2020Seattle, WAOfficer placed his knee on the back of the neck of a suspect; after onlookers shouted for him to remove his knee from the man's neck, his partner pulled it off.[71]

June 1, 2020Louisville, KYLocal chef David McAtee was fatally shot by the Kentucky National Guard.[95][96]

June 4, 2020Buffalo, NYMartin Gugino, a 75-year-old man with a cane, was left bleeding from the head after approaching police officers and being shoved to the ground by the police. A video of the encounter shows an officer leaning down to examine him, but another officer then pulls the first officer away. Several other officers are seen walking by the man, motionless on the ground, without checking on him.[115]

June 4, 2020San Diego, CAAfter a protest, a woman was forcibly dragged into an unmarked car by unidentified men in civilian clothing. Unwilling to reveal where the woman would be taken, one of the assailants threatened bystanders: "You follow us, you will get shot! Do you understand me?!" The San Diego Police Department later confirmed the individuals were law enforcement officers and claimed the woman had hit police with a protest sign.[118]

June 8, 2020Seattle, WAAt the East Precinct, a 26-year-old protester was shot in the chest with a blast ball as she stood 25 feet from the police line. Her heart stopped and street medics raced her unconscious body away on a makeshift stretcher as flash grenades exploded around them. Following chest compressions she was revived then taken to Virginia Mason Hospital. Though she went into cardiac arrest again at the hospital, doctors were able to keep her alive.[119][120]

September 24, 2020Seattle, WAA police officer was filmed pushing his bicycle over the head of a protester lying on the street.[128]

October 29, 2020Philadelphia, PAVideo footage showed a slow-moving SUV being surrounded by police. Officers with batons surrounded the vehicle, broke its windows, pulled its driver and a passenger, Rickia Young and her teenage nephew, from the car, threw them onto the ground, and then pulled Young's 2-year-old son from the backseat. Young had to be taken to the hospital for injuries sustained in the arrest and was later released without charges. [129]

I don't know about the most recent occasion, but . . .

(a bunch of incidents not involving people being shot with bullets)
Thank you for confirming that I was correct.

Thank you for confirming that I was correct.

You asked a question, which I answered probably a lot more comprehensively than you were expecting. So instead you want to shift your goalposts and further highlight your ignorance by thinking that a question can be "correct." I understand the rather... special... thinking behind the question of course, which also is obviously not correct. Have a nice day :)

The answer you gave was longer than average, but not at all responsive to the question asked.

I wonder what would happen if one of the insurectionists from kavinough hearings was shot in the head?
Simple look at some of the more extreme right wing talking points then amplify them on the major networks throw in a riot or two a you'll have your response.

How many members of congress were killed by those "violent" protestors?

And we don't hear this story because it doesn't fit the left wing narative. Who told them to stand down? Was that from Chuck and Nancy? Who?

Try reading the damned article, would you?

No members of Congress but five Capitol police died as a result. Isn't that enough death for you, or are you one of those that wants to see the blood of some of our elected officials shed for Trump?

Ashli Babbitt was a terrorist and died like a terrorist. It's a shame these insurrectionists weren't shot the moment they stepped foot through the broken windows and doors they bashed in. There's no better deterrent to an insurrection attempt then having to step over the bodies of co-conspirators, traitors and insurrections. There should have been much more blood shed that day from people trying to destroy this country's democracy. Cast them all to hell in their own bloody rage and be done with it. They would never try it again, I assure you.

So you're comparing a few protestors that blocked hallways to the insurrection that happened on Jan. 6th where thousands of people stormed the capitol to interrupt an election process and threatened senators. Yeah, you're dismissed and my comments stand UNREFUTED. Thank you for proving me right that he and now you have lied. Typical Trump supporters.

I think the leftwing is missing the fact that this is an indictment on them. Which deep-stater passed down the order to allow this invasion to happen?

Actually, if the police had been adequately equipped, the insurrection may very well have never escalated to the point that someone was shot and killed.

I'm just wondering, what is your stance on defunding the police? Defunding would most likely diminish their protective gear which you just advocated for with regard to the Capitol police.
