Cap removed after sub hits vent; 2 cleanup workers die in separate events

BP forced to remove oil containment cap

NEW ORLEANS: The Coast Guard says BP has been forced to remove a cap that was containing some of the oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico.

Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen says an underwater robot bumped into the venting system. That sent gas rising through vent that carries warm water down to prevent ice-like crystals from forming in the cap.

Allen says the cap has been removed and crews are checking to see if crystals have formed before putting it back on. In the meantime, a different system is stilling burning oil on the surface.

Before the problem with the containment cap, it had collected about 700,000 gallons of oil in the previous 24 hours. Another 438,000 gallons was burned.

And now oil is again gushing into the Gulf at more than the original rate. Now before you accuse BP of ineptness (they are inept, but only at following safety regulations), you should realize that BP does have some of the brightest minds in the world when it comes to deepwater drilling. Rather, the problem here seems to be that, with deep water drilling itself, we are just about at the limit that present technology provides. This is one reason for the moratorium to be placed on deep water exploration. The other reason is that we have no idea of the other 33 rigs that would be impacted under the moratorium is playing by the "BP game plan", which turned out to be disasterous in the Deepwater Horizon misadventure. Until we can be assured that no further incidents of this kind are likely to occur, reason dictates that we keep the moratorium in place until we can be absolutely sure that deepwater drilling can be done in a reasonably safe manner. I do not believe that is too much to ask for...........

For "America the Beautiful".

Re: BP forced to remove oil containment cap

Unfortunately Obama is unable to forbid deep water drilling by the Cubans and the Russians and other not under US control.
