The man once known as Canada's "prince of pot" is now a federal inmate in the U.S. system after a judge in Washington sentenced him Friday to five years in prison.

Marijuana activist Marc Emery pleaded guilty in May in U.S. District Court in Seattle, Washington, to a single count of conspiracy to manufacture marijuana after an 18-month investigation into the seed-selling business Emery operated from his head shop in Vancouver, British Columbia.

I really feel like the pendulum is really swinging towards legalization, people are finally realizing that it is just a harmless plant that makes you feel good. I don't understand what the government gains by keeping it illegal.

Also I wanted to dispel a quick myth, I noticed some Anti-Marijuana propaganda floating around the viral web pertaining to the California proposition.

They stated it was the #1 drug seen in rehab for children, what really grinds my gears

about that is just how they fail to tell the other said of the story, that other said being the overwhelming majority of those kids are court ordered or forced by their parents to attend rehab for Marijuana.

wrong section, sorry..Appreciate it if you could move it to it's proper forum.

I truely hate the Canadian government for caving in on his extradition to the US

He committed no crime in Canada, he never set foot in the US to commit a crime in the US. So as he never committed a crime in the US and what he was doing was and is legal in Canada the Can government should never have extradited him

I've actually been to his headshop and I met him once before all this happened.

He seems like a good guy.

Totally agree with you LT. This whole thing was bull****. He shouldn't have been extradited.

FREE EMERY!

Wow, I'm glad they got this dangerous criminal off the streets. I will feel so much safer now that he's behind bars.

Stupid marijuana laws ...

It would be interesting to know just how much tax money and law enforcement time was used to prosecute this guy, and I wonder how many violent criminals could have been captured and prosecuted with that money.

So Canada extradite him to the US for something that is perfectly legal in Canada? Thats ****ed up. What next is Canada going to extradite someone to the middle east because they run a porn site that depicts adultery? I hope my the US doesn't do that kind of ****.

The thing was he was selling marijauna seeds via mail to the US...

God Canada you are wimps. Why do you extradite some one who broke no law. Grow a backbone and be like no America I will be you bitch no more.

what a waste of tax dollars and jail space. If laws were evaluated objectively and rationally, the weed bans are as moronic as no hunting on sunday crap

If you run a porn site depicting adultery and someone in the middle east look at it then it could be argued that you were showing porn depicting adultery to the middle east.
If he was in the US while selling marijuana seeds then that might be a valid point, however he was in Canada selling seeds via mail which as far as I know is legal in Canada. Canada should not have extradited him. He is under no obligation to follow US law just like a gun store in Oklahoma is under no obligation to follow New York's anti-2nd amendment laws just because a New Yorker shows up to buy a fire arm.

Probably is, but they dont really need rehab for marijuana its just a form of punishment for juveniles. Or just a way to get them sto stop consuming a relatively harmless drug. IDK. I'd prefer minors didnt get their hands on it because it saps motivation sometimes. /meh.

Why didn't Canada tell US to screw off? How do we have the right to put this guy in jail?

Most likely the US government under the Bush admin threatened Canada with requiring Canadians to get Visa's to visit the US rather then just passports or something along those lines

Do you have a basis for any of that or are you just making stuff up?

I am sure the US government threatened Canada with something, Visa's and or passports at the time was a big issue

Maybe while in jail he'll have a change of heart. Pot should not be legalized, and he has pleaded guilty.

So I'm assuming your fighting for temperance as well?

No, marijuana is not alcohol.

Yet marijuana is less addicting than alcohol, the high the user receives isn't anymore detrimental than the high a user receives on alcohol, and marijuana causes no more long term harm than alcohol. So why should marijuana be illegal, but alcohol be legal when marijuana is no worse than alcohol?

But pot is illegal

Of course so was alcohol
