Just 20 hours ago, Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney disclosed a new alliance between Canada and the EU. Canada is diversifying economic relationships with other countries as a bulwark against Trump's tariffs. Canada is increasing their defense spending significantly and increasing its defense relationships with Europe and others. Donald Trump is making the United States weaker internationally. Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a partnership between the EU and Canada, the 'Security & Defense Partnership'. Many of Canada's allies in Europe, including Britain and Germany, are also expanding their militaries in the face of Trump's isolationism.

"This gives Canada access to European defense partners for their needs. It will give Canada's defense suppliers greater opportunities to help supply Europe's defense needs. Canada's investment in defense will expand Canada's industrial capacity in order to equip Canadian armed forces using Canadian steel, Canadian aluminum, Canadian critical minerals, Canadian cyber and Canadian lumber. Canada will protect NATO's Eastern flank, and by NATO protecting Canada, they will protect Canada's Western flank."

"There is a new world order being formed due to Donald Trump destroying the previous WWII order. Canada is a world energy superpower, needs to find new alliances being formed without the United States. International order, built after the Second World War, and reshaped following the Cold War, is under pressure. Russia is emboldened. China is more assertive. The long-held view that Canada's geographic location will protect us, is becoming archaic. Our Arctic waters are increasingly open and there've been rapid advances in cyber, artificial intelligence, quantum, and advanced missile capabilities. Climate change is making our country more vulnerable. The Arctic is melting. Our wildfires and floods are more frequent and devastating."

Righties response:

51st so Canada better behave.
Hey, SNOWFLAKE, this seem right to you?

Canada will protect NATO's Eastern flank, and by NATO protecting Canada, they will protect Canada's Western flank."

Shouldn't that be the other way around?

I hope I don't look like an idiot now but it seems backwards.

Important to note that Carney is expanding out alliances but in no way is he turning his back on our American alliances. He simply realizes that we have been too tightly coupled to America for too long both from an economic and security perspective. As an example, he also announced that he has removed all road blocks, like previous policies, that prevented us from joining in the Golden Dome project so we can move quickly if that was an alliance that was considered mutually beneficial. He also announced a month or so ago a huge investment in our arctic protections which involve NORAD. Yesterday he announced a raise for most of our military,

... and you believe this bullshit.

Yeah. At the first sign of trouble he'll be making a phone call to the President and begging for help. That's what the nations around the world do when they need help, beg the U.S.

Canada is #27 in global firepower. Think living on the U.S. border hasn't benefited them for a long time? Now that our President said we are tired of you tariffs, lets have a little tit for tat, they are whining and making a stand. It'll last a few months and then they will come calling. Unless there is an actual military threat and then they'll call yesterday.

None of that matters. Trump would not lift a finger, and Carney knows that. He only has to see the example of Trump repeatedly leaving Ukraine to twist in the wind.

Why would anyone beg for help if it is known that no help will be forthcoming?

Yeah. At the first sign of trouble he'll be making a phone call to the President and begging for help. That's what the nations around the world do when they need help, beg the U.S.
Interestingly it has been the US who has needed or help on many serious occasions but of course as good allies and neighbours we don't need to be asked. I don't recall us ever having asked for help but perhaps we have.

You really need to do some fact checking before making statements like the bolded. Under the USMCA 98% of products being imported by the US from Canada are tariff free.

Bravo! Perhaps they will make it to at least the 2% of GDP.
Actually, given Carney's focus on increased military spending we are on track to meet that by the end of the year and then moving up 5%. Carney has moved incredibly fast on defense, trade and intra provincial infrastructure and trade. What a huge change from Trudeau.

I really don't understand Trumpers. They have been bitching about Canadian defense forever and now we have a PM moving aggressively to step it up and they are still bitching.

Again, Bravo! I support that. Canada has a fine military, just not big enough.

Not sure where you are getting that. I fully support Canada spending more on military defense. I support the EU and the UK doing the same. Perhaps at some point the US can cut down on the number of bases we maintain in Europe and other places. The free world should not be so dependent on US military logistics.

I know Carney has announced that Canada will reach that benchmark this year. As far as I know they have not yet reached it. Hopefully they will.
During the CNN interview from Brussels he said we're at 2%.

You don't look like an idiot but the post makes no sense.

He can do anything he wants. We wish he would. Are you sure this guy isn't a conservative though? His policies seem to be leaning in that direction.

That's because some clearly have no real interest in understanding Trump supporters. The anti-Trumps spend most of their time condemning them because it's clear that they believe the libs should be running the world. Well, that's not about to happen anytime soon. So, Callen it's not the Trumpers who are btiching.

THAT, I suspect, has caveats all across the board, maybe including wildfire fighting budgets.

Having said that the military, finally, is looking to do some upgrading....some of which will remain secret.

Trump & co are outraged as Carney decided we're basing our air defense on the French built Mirage. (We get 40% more firepower and 20% less needed training). We will also be using European weaponry which has enraged Trump.

What the fat lying **** doesn't understand is our national sport is hockey....where pain is not optional but invited.

In fact we should be thanking him...I haven't seen this country so united, so proud since the Canada-Soviet Canada hockey series in the 70's.

The "**** you" quotient rises daily.

"The spending is part of an additional $9 billion for defence that Carney announced earlier this year to meet Canada's NATO commitment."

Hopefully they will keep going and get to the newly agreed upon 5%.
That won't be hard to do. The announcements about pay increases, new subs, new Coast Guard ships, new fighters etc all adds up.

In addition mining of certain resources such as rare earths counts as defence spending.
