Trudeau just announced a plan to introduce a national dental care plan. This would start with coverage for people under 18, people with disabilities and seniors.

Thoughts?

I am a senior, I already get my meds covered (less the deductable), and I get free eye exams once a year, so why not dental?

Gotta love our Socialist paradise!!!

There is for seniors:

I suspect you mean for ALL age groups. Not sure that will ever happen, like eye care, these programs are meant for the disadvantaged and seniors.
Good information, thanks. My drugs are covered by my pension plan currently but It seems in 3 years I'll qualify for seniors coverage. Cool.

A good idea, dental care can ruin retired people on limited budgets financially

Healthcare, including dental care, is a human right. Way to go Canada!

We all pay taxes. Spend them on armed forces, or spend them to benefit citizens. Which do you prefer?

Neither of course.

Canada already has insane wait times for healthcare:

This edition of Waiting Your Turn indicates that, overall, waiting times for medically necessary treatment have increased since last year. Specialist physicians surveyed report a median waiting time of 25.6 weeks between referral from a general practitioner and receipt of treatment—longer than the wait of 22.6 weeks reported in 2020. This year’s wait time is the longest wait time recorded in this survey’s history and is 175% longer than in 1993, when it was just 9.3 weeks.

6 months!

Dental will be even worse, since you can live (in pain) without it.

Pandemic - heard of it? Stressing healthcare delivery in every country, including your own.

Sounds good.

Let's just remember to give credit where it's actually due if and when this comes about: the NDP for dragging the Liberal party kicking and screaming to enact this policy (likewise on national pharmacare).

The first Canadian politician I ever spoke to spoke of a dream...that soon, all Canadians would have FULL medical coverage, including dental...

His name as Thomas C. Douglas and he was speaking in my home town of Waterloo, Ontario. It was 1966.

My reaction this is Bravo Trudeau! It's about ****ing time!

I am also told he is sitting on a developing plan to increase incomes of seniors, me, and to bolster the already in place programs.

Every government in Canada is dipping into every well to find $ to help stave off this atomic rocket inflation (water melon 300% in 3 weeks!) except mine. In British Columbia the so called socialist NDP has a $2 billion SURPLUS, and some seniors, including me, have been gouged by a 100% increase in BC Pharmacare deductibles.

There is a lot of hostility toward Trudeau. I don't know why. His father was so hated in the west maybe its the name. I have met him, he is one of few politicians who listens. He is NOT his father's son in most ways, he is Margaret's son, a gentle, creative soul who pioneered the way for mental illness among women in the early 70's.
The country is as united as ever and the only real political divide is in every country....climate change. He is instituting a carbon tax in tiers & any anti carbon measure in Canada gets an automatic 60 % for.

Sometimes I am convinced that politics is not a science at all, but a result of random idiocy among the so called 'informed voters"

It's not really a mystery. Shall we count the reasons?

For a partial list off the top of my head:

  • Unstated gifts from billionaire Aga Khan in violation of ethics rules.
  • Not only scrapping electoral reform when his own advisory panel didn't give him the runoff voting answer he wanted, but actively campaigning against it and while trying to frame it as being unpopular (it wasn't).
  • SNC Lavalin Scandal and all things associated with it (like dropping Jody Wilson-Raybould). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SNC-Lavalin_affair
  • WE Charity Scandal (including stunts like proroguing parliament in response to investigations, among other things) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WE_Charity_scandal
  • Significantly overpaying for the Kinder pipeline.
Not that the Conservatives would be any better, but Trudeau can be accuracy described as ethically compromised at a minimum.

Singh is on CBC now rightfully taking credit for pushing dental care.

I liked Jagmeet at first. But his deal with the Liberals was heavy handed and a real disappointment. Canada has always benefited from minority governments. But this one is weak, there may as well not be a commons as all they talk about and fight about are procedure matters: "Mr speaker the Prime minister is not at his desk....!
Who gives a shit? The nation is reeling, the people are scared. Three years of COVID and now skyrocketing inflation.

Jagmeet's deal with the Liberals got us national dental and national pharmacare (which the Liberals often promised and never delivered until essentially being forced to) which have been overdue for decades, and he should receive full accolades for that; there is not a thing disappointing about the concessions he exacted as it is to the benefit of the overwhelming preponderance of Canadians and will save our country large sums of money in the long run through the typical efficiencies and economies of scale of national programs while improving health outcomes.

Carrot-dangling?
When is this supposed to start? When he wins the next election? 😁

I wonder if Trudeau will dare call Jagmeet Singh's seeming bluff.
Everybody knows NDP isn't ready for an election anytime soon. They don't have the money!

Legislation will be tabled this week.

I don't know much how legislations are passed.
When is the supposed target date for the program to become available?
